Who do they think they are? We should teach them a lesson and steal their coach.
Big Michigan fan, big Beilein fan casual college basketball fan - no one has mentioned Crean?!? Not recommending just wondering with his Michigan connections why not?
People going out of their way to diss the NBA. . . thatās novel. No idea why a masterful coach who most of us revere would want to try his hand coaching the best players in the world.
Heād make sense for a lot of reasons. Heās from Mount Pleasant, his first ever job was at Alma college, heās recruited well over the years and he was pretty damn successful in my opinion at Indiana when the Big Ten was the best conference in college basketball. The Harbaugh connection too obviously.
Heās also pretty widely considered an ass by a lot of basketball people and doesnāt always leave the best impressions on people. Heās got a great class coming to Georgia. I wouldnāt be opposed to it but I just think heās put himself in a pretty good spot at Georgia so that is why nobody is considering him.
We would have to stop making fun of him.
Seems that the soft skills arenāt there, but great basketball mind. I thought he was insightful from time to time as a color guy when he was in the booth, but also very awkward.
I thought Crean was the best BBall commentator ESPN has had in YEARS. Was genuinely upset he was leaving for Georgia.
Thanks for sharing. Please pass along other things you donāt like.
Because heās Tom Crean.
Could I still call him Schrute?
Yea, good call out. I was thinking the same. Iām not a fan of his but JH could at least visit the locker room after the game without any negative feedback.
I used to hate Crean but I think he is a good coach. I liked him more after hearing some of his commentary and realized he is a very smart guy. Even though I used to despise him I am surprised he is not at least considered. I think we could do much worse.
The talk of Smart as a potential candidate is disappointing. I am crossing my fingers the people in charge forget about reputation and look for actual evidence that some of these candidates can actually coach. I would prefer a good coach and average recruiter over a good recruiter and an average coach.
Best case scenario we get a good coach and good recruiterāwhich is sort of the reason why I donāt understand why Crean would not at least be a consideration. We have to be open minded, I think.
As an IU grad, I can confidently state that my buddies who are fervent fans of the Hoosiers enjoyed the Mo Wagner bulldozing of Crean event with twice the level of satisfaction as most UM fansā¦and Iām pretty sure we all enjoyed that immensely at the time. Just a minor cautionary tale, as I too found myself pleasantly surprised by his persona on the mic.
Seems like a great basketball mind but just not the personality you need in that leadership position.
Maybe he can take it down a few notches as he ages and gets more wise? Admittedly, the āyou ruined our programā moment made him look like a total madman.
I hear what you guys are saying.
Hell no to Crean for numerous reasons.
@umhoops Dylan, wondering if you (or B Quinn) have any takes on the manner in which JB took the job/left? I get that JB wanted privacy, but totally blindsiding your current players/staff/recruits seems kind of classless, and leaves UM in a tough position. I guess the guys who were going to leave/decommit would do so regardless of how they found out JB was leaving, but it still looks like JB left his guys scrambling. Also, the Cavs have known their fate for some time. Not sure why it took this long for the deal to happen.
I thought he let Warde know 10 days before he took the Cavs job that he was going to be interviewing for NBA jobs?
What perplexes me is that some peopleās hysteria seems to rise as the days go by rather than subside.
Athletic director Warde Manuel, Beileinās boss, was given a sliver of notice. Beilein alerted him two weeks ago that he was going to engage in conversations with NBA teams. No specifics were given. No teams were mentioned. Things were exceedingly preliminary at that point.
Soon after, on May 2, Manuel traveled to South Africa with the Michigan football team. The only communication between the two in the days that followed was a text message from Manuel to Beilein asking how things were going. Beilein responded that all was well and the two should catch up. Their next contact was 11 days later, on Monday morning, when Beilein called Manuel to tell him he had accepted the job with the Cavaliers.
