Lions-Bills would be the best Super Bowl ever
Jamo ATD is free money
I’m intrigued
While that would be lovely, I think the Bills are in soft-rebuild mode this year (clearing cap space for 2025 with the Diggs trade and letting various mid-tier free agents walk, all while playing some really young players). Anytime you have Allen, you could certainly find a way to win it all, I just think we’re gearing up for a run during 2025/2026.
Negative. I understand the narrative but anyone who watched Buffalo late last year will tell you , the names they lost were just that, names.
Outside of Morse , none of the “stars” they lost were major factors in the win streak they went on. In fact you could argue the opposite. I loved Hyde and Poyer but they were struggling at times and limited the defense with their lack of athleticism at that age.
Diggs didn’t do anything and was a huge factor in the Chiefs playoff loss with multiple huge mess ups. His diva ways caused Josh to force looks to him the last two years and play tight sometimes. They improved when they added Brady who understands the roster and how to use them and phased Diggs out.
Shakir, Kincaid, Torrence, Benford, Cook, Bernard , Brown Oliver , Rousseau . All young guys, were the stars with Josh , Dawkins, and Douglas that turned it around. They are going to be a problem for years. Window just opening.
End rant.
PS : Von might be back. Strap in and make that bet-> profit.
I will say, if they do match up , I may lean Lions due to style and the fact that Bernard/ Milano are dinged again. They’d need all hands on deck to survive that run game.
So, I’ll add a couple thoughts after last night. Obviously you touched on elevating Brady last year to OC - he’s definitely just brought a different mentality (run, everybody eats, etc.). But maybe the most underrated part is that the O-Line looks really (really!) good. After losing Morse, I thought there may be a step back, but they are mauling defenders and keeping Allen upright. Dawkins has been a stalwart for years, and Spencer Brown is a huge human. But McGovern at center seems like a great pickup, and I’ve thought Edwards has been very solid. O’Torrence has been the “weakest” link, but there is so much potential there.
Defensively, the injuries are mounting, but McD and Babich have them in the right spots. McD can game plan well, and it’s pretty apparent there was a blueprint to beating the dolphins. The first half of the Arizona game had me a little nervous, and the run D is still suspect (to your point, yes, I think the Lions would run very well on this defense). Johnson not going on IR and the possibility of Milano returning in Decemberish gives me some hope. If TB is out for a long period of time, it may be a little more difficult. There has definitely been a philosophy shift towards rangy LBs that can cover, and I think the Bills have some good young pieces there (Dorian, TB).
So yeah, maybe there’s more hope than doom & gloom, but having lived through the four SB losses, and then the drought, (and add in 13 seconds) I’ve got years and years of PTSD that the Allen years have only started to alleviate. I literally cringe when I hear the young fans and new bandwagon fans calling for McDermott to be fired, as they really don’t know the depths of despair that the 00’s were. He may not be a great in-game coach (I think he makes great adjustments, just not snap decisions), he’s consistently getting the most out of this team and doesn’t seem afraid to make decisions to shake things up when it’s not going well (discarding Dorsey last year, jettisoning Diggs).
So lastly, I still think we’re a year away - the young kids are getting some valuable experience and we’ll finally have cap room to shore up any deficiencies. Not saying we couldn’t go on a run this year, just saying if we’re good this year, I expect us to be REALLY good in 2025 and 2026.
Ahh I didn’t pick up you are a Bills fan til after I made my lengthy post last night and reread yours.
I think they can do it this year but Bernard and Milano are essential to getting them from 2nd round exit to Super Bowl champs.
People want to point to how Mahomes has Allen’s number in the playoffs but the reasons for those losses in the last two playoff choke jobs is much more nuanced.
In fact I’d argue Josh has outplayed Mahomes in the last 4 regular season/ playoff match ups (is 2-2). The team and McDermott were out played , not Josh. Mahomes is better and more consistent but Josh has been the superior QB in those 4 games imo.
13 seconds, Josh left the field the winner. That choke job wasn’t on him. His team let him down. Last year Diggs and Sherfield had 3 big drops between them on 40 yard plus plays where they were WIDE open in NFL terms. Those were great plays by Josh and forced 3 unnecessary punts on those drives, all should have gone for points. Meanwhile MVS is catching one handers down the side lines last year in blanketed coverage by Benford.
Then Bass shanks a fairly easy kick compared to Butker banging a sixty yarder in the frozen tundra 3 years ago. At some point in big moments in big games Josh needs guys to make the easy plays. He has not been problem in those two losses.
I’d add too, the Bills were missing Benford ( elite number 2 cb) and not their first string lb’s, not their 2nd string lb’s but they were on a their 3rd string olb and Aj Klein who was just in street clothes on vacation in Miami. And they STILL would have won if guys didn’t wet themselves.
Long post but my point is they are much closer than anyone is giving them credit for and I believe this team is better talent wise than last year and 3 years ago. I also think Brady and Babich are superior to Frazier and Daboll.
Babich has worked wonders with his LB’s decimated by injuries, I think he has the ability to bring this d to the next level.
But we can’t have Bernard and Milano out and play the Chiefs again. Spector played great ( usually does when called upon and not hurt) but we need most hands on deck to finish the Chiefs off. Or at least most the stars for once.
The Douglas trade was a heist and saved us from the Tre injuries. Benford as your number 2 improves that secondary immensely.
Bishop looked good in scrub time. Torrence was a stud Rookie last year. I think he builds on it. Most excited I’ve been as a Bills fan in years,
