I agree, but do you think their team will be that much worse than before the kids left? They already played a whole year without grandstaff, and the rest of them were bench players (Mitchell started at the end because of Tate’s injury). I am not saying losing your bench is insignificant, but I think Thad will ‘reload’ to a talent level that is relatively close to what he wouldve had without the massive efflux.
I think it will take at least a year to rebound from this. To this exact point they have 8 scholarship players. They really need to find a gem that is a grad transfer or else it will be tough. There just simply aren’t enough grad transfers that they can pull in 2-5. They have 4 of their starters, 2 bench players, and 2 incoming freshman that is it. I just can not see a way they pull this off and are in the top half of the big ten and I really hope I am right about this.
Maybe Thad shouldn’t have offered before they visited campus and told them they’d have to earn PT, so he could check their egos in advance. /sarcasm
Was gonna say. The people who were touting him as a better recruiter than Beilein a few months ago are now ignoring that he missed on this large pile of humanity and telling us what a super-hombre he is to be handing them ultimatums.
why would spike want to stay and just spell Walton and battle a young gun in Simpson for playing time? Let him go and start or play the bulk of the minutes somewhere for his final year of college ball.
Loving, Bates-Diop, Lyle, Williams, Tate isn’t exactly chopped liver. If Thompson decides to return without hiring an agent that’s the same group that pretty much put up 70 on Michigan.
OMG. Do we really need to revisit this? Compare the records of the two coaches and it is not even close.
They haven’t made a final four since 2012 and an elite 8 since 2013, both a year longer than Beilein. They also didn’t make the tourney this year and unlike us in 2015, their top 2 players weren’t injured for the majority of Big Ten play. Listen, I criticize Beilein a lot and I am not against others doing it too, but for God’s sake listen to yourself talk. Hold other coaches to the same standards that you hold Beilein. It’s gotten to the point where people like you refuse to acknowledge ANY good done by him and look to jab him at all opportunities.
And missed the NCAA Tournament.
The same team that only had 3 quality wins and only one came vs the top 25.
JB’s career doesn’t compare to Thad’s. That’s not even debatable.
With that being said, both school’s have been disappointing the last 2 years. I don’t think either JB or Thad would say they were satisfied by their team’s play over the past 2 seasons. Both coach’s have had in-game coaching blunders as well as too many recruiting misses. It’ll be interesting to see which coach takes their team to the top 3 of the B1G first.
If you’re suggesting that Beilein lacks in comparison to Matta, see the two replies below yours. I have admired Matta’s teams–just to try to do this with a tiny bit of nuance–but am criticizing the lack of proportion around here. Beilein stinks, everyone and everything is better, etc. . . In fact it’s quite clear that he has placed us in the top three of B1G play over a very rough five, six years, and–stodgy recruiting practices or not–mostly done it by spying marvelous diamonds in the rough. Fans, y’know, they drink, they smoke, they anonymously get out their frustrations–as frustrated hoop heroes or whatever–on anonymous message boards. And that’s okay–exercises in Buddhist compassion or patience, message boards are not. But when it’s just bile day after day, some of us will continue to preach sanity.
Seriously… no more freaking Thad Matta/John Beilein debates.
“They drink, they smoke…” Sheesh, get off your high horse man.
From your tone, you’d think you were posting your impassioned defences of the status quo from the summit of Everest or something. You are just a dude on the internet like the rest of us.
They are both doing some spring cleaning so they have that in common at least. Ties in to this thread.
Seems like a good fit. Would be horrendous as a fan to see him play on another Big Ten team. Plus, that would be another Indiana team to have insight into Michigan/Beilein’s strategies.
Thought Purdue might be interested given Painter’s inability to recruit a top PG.
Didn’t I read that he wasn’t allowed to transfer to another B1G?
If he wants to transfer in the Big Ten, he has to appeal.
