My brother-in-law made the All Star team in his softball league in Florida…at the age of 73! Of course, he has to tell me all about it! . It’s OK, though, I’m the only guy in the family (two brothers and another brother-in-law) who will listen to him when he brags about how great he is. He never played organized baseball when he was a kid, but now…he’s an All Star, and I think that’s great!
Great post, mgl! Loved it!
That’s how I feel about running in some ways. Sometimes it feels like the most useful outlet I have to channel all kinds of emotions (from rage to simple work stress to joy and everything in between) in a productive manner. I haven’t hooped in a few years, but was probably never good enough to replicate that exact feeling despite being a tryhard who could run circles around people. Catching the ball clean, dribbling, and finishing were very different matters, though
Cooley’s decision will impact several other jobs. Penn State’s Micah Shrewsberry is perceived as the backup plan to Cooley at Georgetown, while he’s also considered one of the two favorites at Notre Dame. Given his time with the Boston Celtics, it wouldn’t be a shock to see Providence have Shrewsberry on its list to replace Cooley should he leave, too.
If you were a P5 AD, would you hire Micah or Cooley?
One guy has proven that he can run a high-level program for longer and recruit at a higher clip. One guy seems to be way more forward thinking as far as strategy, etc.
I know PSU isn’t the best job, but how is Providence considered a better job? I am not even sure how present day Georgetown or ND is an automatic to leave PSU for. I know Georgetown has some all timers for basketball alums and more history of being good, but does a good Georgetown stop the ACC from stealing all that area’s recruits?
I do feel like there are things that make Georgetown hard (expectations > reality) but Penn State is a categorically awful job.
PSU hoops is one of the most institutionally unsupported revsports in the P6
I’d go with Cooley, although at risk of being maybe too unkind to Shrewsberry. The portal era really has given Cooley a bump. What’s Shrewsberry without Pickett?
On the other hand, Shrewsberry may have a much higher ceiling, and Gtown isn’t going to stop being a sleeping giant.
I think, still, Cooley?
But once you have it going is it worth leaving for a trash Providence or ND job? I can see taking a swing at Georgetown based in tradition or history, but woof. I would hold out for a better job if it eas me personally.
Perhaps PSU is destined to be bad next year again, and he wants to cash in while his market is high I guess.
I don’t think Shrews would leave PSU for providence but I can see why he’d leave for ND or GT
Does he officially have it going at PSU? He has the oldest team in the country. What happens when they are all gone? Now is actually the perfect time to leave before he’s back to square one trying to build a basketball program in State College
Penn State is such a bad job that if you accomplish anything sufficient there to land yourself another offer, you take that offer.
If the carousel moves the right way, would think Providence reaches out to Pitino (sr) before anybody else.
I think if you really like nature and hills and hunting and fishing, PSU might be one of the best jobs in the country. But I think if you’re a basketball obsessive, it’s pretty unlikely those things would sway you from coaching at Georgetown, which has massively better recruiting potential and is in an easier league. It has problems but the upside is dramatically different than PSU.
That’s an interesting one. Would he go back to Providence over trying St Johns?
MSU has reached out to about every position in the portal except C.
Who have they reached out to?
Zach Austin, the Butler kid, and someone else
I guess in the sense that Providence is a basketball school, while at PSU you’re in the shadow of the football program. But it seems like he could aim higher.
