Big Ten Basketball 2021-22 Discussion

I wonder if we lose all three assistants

There are so many different schools at every single level between Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan drawing from that talent pool. Seems like a real tough grind to get to the top. Yaklich certainly isn’t having an easy go of it.

Phil to LaSalle maybe but idk if they’d wanna hire him. Eisley probably needs more time to get the rep for a HC job, considering it sounds like he wants to stay in college.

Perhaps he’d like a familiar change of scenery?

Amaker made one tourney in four years and booted. Willard had made 6 of 7. I don’t think those resumes are really comparable.

We just gonna ignore the fact that Seton Hall missed the tournament Willard’s first 5 years over which Seton Hall had an 82-81 record? And then all of a sudden as the Old Big East died and was replaced with all small private schools that aren’t traditional powers, it became much easier for a 53rd ranked team to sneak into the tournament?

If it’s not hunter as Saddis replacement, I hope juwan goes after Travis Steele. Tremendous recruiter who knows everyone in the Midwest.

I’m very mixed on Steele. Clearly an amazing recruiter, but from everything I’ve heard (from people and just watching the results at Xavier)… He just kind of sucks as an actual coach (and as a culture builder). Not sure what to make of the trade-offs there.

I’m looking at results. The makeup of the league for that purpose is not relevant to me. His first five years is a moot point by now. He got it and had it rolling.

Speculating on assistant hires in basketball is kind of pointless cause so much of it comes down to how they fit with Juwan and the other coaches. Not as clear cut in building a speculative list as football for several reasons

Not just that, but also depends on who is already in the Rolodex. Juwan may already have guys lined up, at least from his perspective.

Yeah that’s exactly what I mean. Juwan probably doesn’t know Travis Steele from Travis Pastrana. He will talk to people he knows to get recs and it’ll go from there

I wonder what he would prioritize. As long as Eisley’s on staff it’s not gonna be offense or guards, presumably. It’s often said that the defense is Juwan’s. Our affinity to Yaklich is far greater than his, but, IIRC, he did offer both Yack and Saddi assistant positions, right? Yack just chose Texas instead? Maybe that suggests he’d be into having a defensive coordinator, or maybe that’s no longer the case.

I think it was likely a sign of appreciation for what he did at the university. But any time a “coordinator” has been brought up to Juwan he’s scoffed at it. It’s really just not common(or necessary usually) in basketball. The two sides of the court are just so much more connected than in football

I didn’t know he’d scoffed at it, but I do get why. When you have a Beilein in '16 kind of situation it may make a lot more sense to do it that way, but that’s not this situation. Juwan’s not clearly a guy who thrives on one side of the ball and really needs help on the other.

The coordinator system also necessitates both coaches to participate 50% in every scout so you can’t have one out recruiting while the other handles

My guess would be Chris Hunter promotion. Well rounded background as a player and with the program.

I tend to agree with you…but he’s been passed over a couple of times already. Maybe now that Juwan knows him better there’s a difference.

Oh right, forgot he’s there and ready, thank you.

Really wasn’t going to be a chance that Hunter would get that role to start Juwan’s tenure, and he hasn’t had any assistant attrition since.
