Big Ten Basketball 2021-22 Discussion

I do think the “keep fouling while Izzo yells at the refs to stop calling fouls” strategy is their best path to success and that requires a lot of lineups.

I am starting to think that Hall is their best player and needs 30+ minutes a game. It would be good to get more Bingham minutes if he can handle it physically. I have never been a big fan of Gabe Brown’s game. He seems to spend too much time just standing in the corner waiting for someone to throw him the ball for an open three.

LOL. Now that you put it that way, that’s kind of exactly what it is…

I have been vocal about Izzo and his playing a million people but it’s a better problem than what we have. At this point we basically have no viable backcourt subs and only BJJ and TWill as rolls of the dice that could hit. At least Izzo has more rolls of the dice he can try.

Is it really too much to ask for our starters to play 40 minutes nightly?!?!

No idea what’s going on here… feels like they need to move the game and fit in the OSU/Iowa game so I’m not sure.

I’m a fan of keeping it where it is scheduled. Brutal stretch we are in the middle of. I really think these 2 Iowa games are crucial as I’m not a believer in them and think they could be 2 good wins and having it on a Thursday as opposed to Tuesday helps our chances.

would be fantastic to have the extra rest

Both of those tweets have been deleted.

I think there is something to the narrative around MSU that Izzo has a quick trigger to pull people and may prevent some guys from getting into a groove. Along those lines it does feel that Christie, Brown, Hall, and Bingham need to play starters minutes and they don’t consistently. But I don’t think that’s really the story of their issues because I don’t think their bench has been nearly as bad as last year’s was.

I think their issues is that their halfcourt offense is still clunky based on personnel. Their PGs aren’t shooters or scorers. Stop transition, funnel offense to the PGs, give yourself a chance.

Luka getting his number retired. Am I missing something that all recent players need to get their number retired asap?? Roy Marble doesn’t have his # retired that’s a different story. They should honor Lute Olson the last coach to get them to a Final Four.

Will Burke be the next one for Michigan?

Yeah I don’t understand the rush with this. Dumb trend. Guess Hunter will have this retired during the B1G home game in December then.

Not even Glenn Rice has his number retired, let alone Trey Buke, Stauskas, Juwan, or Webber. No chance for Hunter.

I feel like it means more for the player if they don’t retire it until later too. Seems like it’d be more fun to reflect on your college career and go back to campus years later as opposed to doing it less than a year after you were playing there.

Yeah it’s weird to me. Gotta let it simmer for awhile. Illinois fans are already talking about retiting Kofi’s number as a foregone conclusion. Imagine if Illinois doesn’t make it to the second weekend or wins the B1G title yet Ayo and Kofi both end up with retired numbers :joy: More retired jerseys than banners

Agreed and yes there is a balance to how you do things. For example I think it’s long overdue that Gary Grant gets his number retired by Michigan. I think you will have to wait before a Fab Five player gets the treatment and honestly before Trey Burke you could make the case Gary Grant should get his number retired 2x B1G DPOY, consensus AA, B1G Frosh of the Year, 4th all time in total points. It’s been 30+ years since he played and it’s pretty sad nothing has been done with that.

I think it really just depends on the school… if there are dozens of retired jerseys (most schools just honor the jersey they don’t retire the number) then you probably expect to be up there sooner than later.

It’s a combination of a lot of things. Dickinson isn’t mobile so he’s going to struggle in a non-drop defense. Diabate is athletic but still struggles with assignment. Then you have small guards like Jones and Eli getting bullied by bigger guards or bigs. They really don’t have a true wing players who can defend the wing players and can stunt on a PnR play.

They’re feeling the absence of Franz Wagner on defense because Franz covered up a lot of things on defense IMO.

Maybe some future post or pindown pod could compare where we are right now on offense & defense to the earlier Beilein teams. Those teams were not good at defense and while they had wings, they rarely had above average defenders, they used small PGs, they played undersized fours, and their centers were not particularly athletic. They obviously were good at offense - but so is this team.

I think we miss Franz…and Chaundee…and even Mike Smith’s lateral quickness…or Charles Mathews would be nice…

At 111th… Michigan is on track to have its worst finish in adjusted defensive efficiency since Beilein’s first 10-22 team (129th).

Good example of how you can be bad defensively in different ways  Those Beilein teams were usually undersized but this team struggles defensively because it is oversized in a sense.
