Big Ten Basketball 2021-22 Discussion

They were generally pretty good under Archie defensively before their seasons inevitably fell apart down the stretch. Certainly much better defensively than offensively. Talked about IU quite a bit on the pod we dropped today as well.

This is based on Torvik’s adjusted conference numbers:

Michigan is more Iowa than Iowa.

Hard to sort through all those red-ish dots!

To AC’s point, if Indiana is in the top left there then IU (under Woodson) is more IU than IU (under Archie).

Sorry, top left is Rutgers.

Any idea if the IU game is 12 or 3:30pm. I’m seeing both

IU game is at 3:30 pm on Sunday.

Exactly. There are so many things wrong with that statement.

I watched the replay about 10 times and can’t figure out what Courtney thinks he saw. Courtney always seems to be a leader in the serious gaffes department, but this one is the clubhouse leader for most egregious B1G call of the year.

That’s the thing I can’t wrap my head around. It’s a marginal foul call at any other point in the game. With 2 seconds left in a tie game I have no idea how or why that’s called

It’s the kind of call an inexperienced official makes. You get dialed in to the game situation and you don’t want to miss something and screw up the end of the game. You get so locked in that you’re hyper aware of any contact at all and end up whistling marginal contact that doesn’t even meet the definition of a foul. How an experienced official like Courtney, or any D1 official, falls victim to this is beyond me.

Anyone else follow Adrien Nunez on Instagram? He is in Los Angeles, is he not on the team anymore?

The worst crew was in East Lansing this past Saturday especially the last 2 minutes. Probably not great for the conference.

I guess not lol

Could he just be out there for other reasons since we don’t play until Sunday? Maybe he had an interview or something?

Great summary. Being a ref is an impossible job and you can’t expect perfection. I’m harder on them than most, but I understand why they make mistakes. This was just so “out there” for a bad call that it is hard to figure out. I typically lump bad calls into these buckets:

  • Difficult call to make in real time that you shrug about (contact in traffic by the hoop)
  • Ref gets caught up in the momentum or emotion of the moment or crowd (Valentine)
  • Player baits the ref into making a call (flopping, flailing, etc.)
  • Lazy ref anticipates a call (travel with a pump fake, breakaway 1-on-1)
  • Ref is trying to even out a massive foul disparity
  • Star player or team is getting favorable treatment

This call was really none of those. It was minor contact that didn’t affect the play. So strange.

I’m also at a loss to explain Hunter’s inability to get a foul called in his favor (do the refs hate him? is he converting more shots so they don’t feel the need to call?) or why Wisconsin is able to live off of a significant FT advantage given they only have one guy who aggressively drives to the hoop.

Yeah I was thinking he could have been given permission if he had some kind of influencers meeting or something like that. I’m sure at this point he and Juwan would realize there are things that could benefit him more than basketball practice at this point.

“influencers meeting”, LOL. But make no mistake that if the Head Influencer In Charge needed to call a meeting then Nunez would need to be there…
