Big Ten Basketball 2021-22 Discussion

Usually, when there is a five day stretch between games as here, the day after the previous game is an off day—IIRC, NCAA rules require an off day every week except in unusual circumstances (tournaments, etc.). If that’s the case, and yesterday was an off day, why would it matter where he was as long as he wasn’t missing classes or doing anything against team rules?

I agree that Nunez should be free to pursue these other opportunities if it doesn’t interfere with team activities. The only hesitancy is that the team just had a major Covid outbreak and arguably traveling the country and having those sort of contacts isn’t conducive to maintaining a Covid-free environment. I don’t know if Nunez was one of the guys who just had it though so maybe he is in the clear.

It does seem odd on the surface. FWIW, I haven’t found myself watching games and thinking that he’s consistently getting fouled without a call. In Hunter’s case, I don’t think that increased usage should necessarily correlate with frequency of being fouled. With us consistently playing through the post and Hunter often being doubled on the catch, I’d expect the increased usage to result in very few fouls, simply because he’s dealing with the double by passing out of it (and not forcing fouls).

His usage is actually pretty steady YOY. And FWIW, asissts/pass outs don’t qualify in usage rate. Just shots/turnovers.

One thing Hunter does seem to be doing more of this year is the diversity of his shots. He will take more short jumpers, longer hooks, go over each shoulder, take a three, etc. I’m not sure how this would play into the stats, but I wonder if last year his primary plan was “attack the hoop no matter what” and the result was to draw a lot more contact. I agree that there haven’t been too many instances where I thought he got robbed of a FT, but I do think there have been times where I thought to myself “here comes a difficult take into the teeth of the defense” and instead he pulls up from a soft floater or hook.

I thought I saw Kenpom say FT rate was down overall this year. Could be mistaken.

D1 wide team avg is down from 31.4 to 30. Hunter’s FT Rate is down basically 50%

How do I quote a post like some of you are able to do? I don’t see the option anywhere.

Highlight the text and then quote will show up.

I never really thought about this. I understand this is probably because the usage in a game needs to add up to 100% for the stat to make sense and work, but is there a stat that also accounts for assists? Like a mix of usage rate and assist rate? It seems like usage rate doesn’t necessarily work well for, say, pass first point guards right?

Funny. I always interpreted usage rate as a measure of how often a team plays through a certain player. Always fun when Dylan calls you out for not knowing what you’re talking about.

Straight sorcery right there. I’ve always hit reply, clicked the speech bubble icon, then edited the quoted text as needed. :eyes:

I’m astonished that we have the third highest offensive efficiency in the league when most nights we can’t buy a bucket from long range.

Our league play efficiency is built on shot volume. Low TOs and high OReb%

Hot hot hot hot take (or maybe not hot idk?)

Zach Edey is the best big in this conference and it’s not close.

At the third TV timeout, IU’s PGs have 19 of the 21 overall points, 13 by Rob Phinisee, he of the 81.3 offensive efficiency rating. Who called that?

Anyone else feels like Phinisee is preparing for his turn on the random-player-puts-up-27-in-career-best-performance-against-Michigan wheel?

Nope. No chance Phinisee can do this 2 games in a row. He isn’t good. Glad he’s getting it out of the way tonight

Setting up for a big letdown game from them. Perfect spot for us to come to town and steal one.

It will be their 3rd game in 6.5 days. Great chance.
