Supposedly PSU is interested in Dennis Gates, who just took a Cleveland State program that was in shambles to the NCAAT in 2 years. Was on Leonard Hamilton’s staff for 9 years. Seems like it’d be just the type of hire they should go for
Illinois should claim the “Life Championship” like Tennessee football did a few years ago
I was fitted with an aircast once. Puts enough pressure on the calves and ankle to stabilize it laterally, but you can still extend. I suppose the walking boot is more restrictive than that.
I haven’t been able to finish the thread, but I take umbrage at the idea that there are no idiots here. I’ve been cultivating my kneejerk persona for a couple of years now and I’d like some recognition!
Additionally, I started off reading this conversation totally fine with the idea of Illinois also raising a banner. But now I want Brad Underwood to get pooped on by a bird (hit by a truck sounded too mean).
A lot one might say about this, and I’m interested in people’s takes. One thing you might say, though, is that numbers are usually retired and ceremonies held not in the heat of the moment but in due time. That helps you put the player’s contribution into perspective, along with the little niceties like former players and their less-heralded contributions.
To an extent I get it, but the AD’s letter makes clear that winning percentage had been the plan since November. Dude was at the table and participating in the discussion; now is whining as if he wasn’t. GFY!
Stuff happens. Sometimes we’re all Walter, fuming about those f***s down at the league office. That, on occasion, is what it means to be a member of the B1G and the NCAA. These aren’t well-run, professional organizations. Sorry it’s your turn, Illinois, but not our problem. We’re busy trying to get healthy and hopefully prepping to play our rival again.
Delighted to see its not solely up to Scott Bell and Ant Wright to carry the weight here.
Very different situations.
@hack: I believe you were frustrated with Warde during the shutdown for not being more vocal. Turns out his way of handling it worked out pretty well. Loudest one in the room isn’t always the one getting stuff done.
Doesn’t this script feel so familiar? How many times have you seen a player whining about a missed call, fail to get back on D, and the other team scores? Here is a perfect example from last week:
My brother was playing goalie in our men’s league hockey game. Someone bumped the net and it was off the line by about 3 inches. Normally, a goalie would pull the net back into position and play would continue. He didn’t. He stood straight up in the crease, waiting for the official to notice the net. The opposing team centered the puck and scored easily because our goalie was not trying to make a save, he was relying on the official to stop play, due to the net being off the goal line. The ref did not notice the net, and therefore, called it a goal. My brother complained to the ref but it made no difference. On the very next play, the opposing team scored again because our goaltender was splitting his attention between playing goalie and yelling at the ref about his perceived injustice.
If illinois continues to split their attention and worry about a call that was already made, they’re going to get scored on. No one is going to take it easy on them because the call didn’t go their way. Illinois should get a share. They did enough to earn that. The goal also should have been disallowed, the net was off. But the goal counted. The goal on the next play counted too.
Two-time Big Ten player of the year, possible national player of the year. Neither Marble’s stats per game nor accolades really match up with Garza. Obviously Marble was a great player for Iowa, but I think it’s pretty classless and selfish of his family to rain on a college kid’s parade in the heat of the moment.
That’s my personal take on it.
Sorry, not following. What and what? Garza’s and Marble’s? Not making any assumptions, just saying that if you take your time–and host a number-retirement a little after the fact rather than mid-season–maybe you have a chance to do it in a more thoughtful way, avoid stepping on toes.
Kinda surprised it wasn’t already retired. Only other 2,000 point scorer. He had some off court issues but those are done with now, obviously. Based on the article, their criteria is very vague. They said their biggest criteria is NPOTY and All America honors. But they have All Americans that don’t have their numbers retired. And players with no All America honors with their numbers retired.
I don’t think they said Garza wasn’t deserving. Other than off court problems, I don’t see why Marble should not have his number retired. He was the leading scorer in program history until Garza came along. I think they’re understandably upset.
I thought you were somehow comparing to the Illinois situation because that was what everyone was talking about. Just misread it.
The Marble thing isn’t really about Garza, it is about a situation that went south a long time ago. Bringing Marble back when he was near-death to “honor” him and not retire his uniform, when he’s the leading scorer in program history… Pretty telling.
They could have expressed their displeasure more privately or after the season. That would be more understandable. Again, though, it’s just my view. I can see where the Marble family is coming from.
They’ve been doing so privately for a while. Sometimes you gotta make a public stink about it so the public is talking about it more and get some voices on your side. What’s the best time to do that? When retiring jerseys is being talked about. Doesn’t take anything away from Garza. I’m sure he doesn’t give two craps about it. If anything, he’s probably empathetic of the Marble family as a player himself.
More for debate. Is Illinois basketball hashtag…
Every day, guys
Or
Every day guys
Is every day a command or adjective?
