Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 2)

Pretty sure he recruited Lander, Race and Jerome. Are we sure that he “wouldn’t want” the players on IU’s roster?

I NEED for Mike Woodson to be the Indiana coach. Beilein turns them down to go to Marquette and then they go with the alum, and the IU board celebrates and is convinced they’re back because they hired a former player (he’s our Juwan Howard!!!). It’d be too beautiful to watch play out.

by my impression, over his years at Michigan, Beilein recruited against Indiana and Ohio State more than other schools

Woodson is less a sure thing compared to Beilein, but there is a better than 50% chance that he do well at IU

You are absolutely not in the minority of not wanting to see Beilein at Indiana but I never anticipated Indiana fans’ unhappiness with the choice to be on the list of reasons. I’m shocked at the level of entitlement.

I made this argument the other day, but people here showed me I could be wrong. They convinced me, too, that he starts in a far better place, including with recruiting, than he did at M.

Here you go. It’s a 247 subscription site FYI

Beilein to Marquette makes a ton of sense. With the extra covid year for players it would give him the opportunity to fix the biggest regret of his career by coaching Jamal Cain for a year. Everything is coming full circle.

recruiting a kid years ago versus them being able to make an instant impact in his system are two different things. And I was not implying he would try to run off every kid on the roster, merely that in their current state of play none of them would fit what he wants to do.

He would have to break them all down and start over.

I disagree. I’ll always feel good about IU hiring a very old retread who has minimal HC success and no college experience. Is Woodson gonna grind on the recruiting trail as a 64 year old?

I think Mike Woodson would be a massive success at Indiana. He would win tons of games and recruit like a superstar.

It’s not “none” (kids on the roster that Beilein could work with), but he absolutely needs more shooters.

Can’t tell if serious here???

Very old is relative if John Beilein is the alternative candidate. I don’t quite get the outpouring against Mike Woodson myself. I know he became a figure of fun in the New York press with the Knicks, but they’re so dysfunctional. . . Sometimes these people end up getting caricatured on rather thin evidence. But maybe there’s something I don’t know?

I’m as serious as a heart attack my friend

I don’t have anything in particular against Mike Woodson, but I’d say the same about any retirement age career NBA coach with a career 46.3 winning percentage. He’s “just a guy” at the NBA level (and hasn’t been offered a HC job in 7 years), so I’m skeptical that he’s going to be a significantly better developer of talent / X and Os than any other random P5 head coach. Combined with the fact that he has to grind on the recruiting trail for the first time in his life as he receives social security checks. I think there’s a reason that most NBA to college hires don’t work. Juwan is a very special case with extenuating circumstances.

Wait, so a struggling program in the Big Ten has their first tourney appearance in forever and gets matched up with as a 10 seed with 7 seed Clemson, pulling out a win in a close and ugly game?

Huh, that sounds familiar

yeah Juwan is a unicorn. Landing him was the kind of good fortune that usually only befalls Ohio State football

In about 10 years they’ll hire some former player who played in the NBA. Book it
