Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

I know it’s still early but with that Penn St loss that’s probably a back breaker?? Can’t lose to Nebraska.

I’m on the record with Trice over Carr on the 1st team. If Carr could play to make his teammates better - he’s got a much higher upside than any PG in the B1G this season.

You can’t create for people who can’t shoot. If you take out Carrs numbers, the rest of the Minnesota team is shooting 28.4% from three.

You can’t assist on kickouts because they won’t make them, and that takes away any easy assists hitting the roll man or somebody cutting to the basket cause opposing teams can pack the paint with impunity.

Anyone know when David & Meredith Kaplan’s donation expires? Juwan & Jenine has a nice ring to it

It’s late…I give - Carr on the 1st team. Though I will die on the hill that Carr does not play off a dominant big man well. Look at the past 2 years of Oturu and Robbins. Those 2 should be playing PNR every time down the court.

I don’t see how you leave Isaiah off of an all-B1G first team.

A lot of the all big ten teams will come down to how much they stick to position. There are probably 5 big men deserving of a spot on 1st or 2nd team (Garza, Cockburn, Dickinson, Williams, TJD). TJD is probably the only one of those that could play alongside another one. If we assume that you have to get some guards in the mix and have some amount of “actual positions”, I would go with:

1st team
Carr
Dosunmu
Wagner
Jackson-Davis
Garza

2nd team
Trice
Wieskamp?
Livers
Lidell
Cockburn

I had a really hard time with that second guard spot on the 2nd team. There are really not a lot of impressive guards in the Big Ten this year. If it’s “best ten players regardless of position” I’d go with:

1st team
Dosunmu
Garza
Jackson-Davis
Wagner
Lidell

2nd team
Livers
Cockburn
Williams
Dickinson
Carr

Seems to me you have to have one of him or Wagner. I think it’s Wagner by quite a bit though. Livers is a better shooter but Wagner has him beat in every other category- he’s a better defender, rebounder, passer, and driver. I give it to him on the all-around.

There are no official positional designations like in the nba, though it’s possible the voters may have some of that bias.

Last year has Garza, Smith, and Stevens on. 1st. Tillman, Oturu, and Wesson on 2nd. I suppose that’s technically 3 frontcourt players and 2 backcourt players

Scoring isn’t everything (but it is more than it should be in this conversation) and here are the Big Ten conference-only scoring leaders.

Michigan players at 13, 16 and 20. No one over 15 points per game.

Feels like it. They have so many brutal losses: Seton Hall (OT), @IU (OT), @OSU (blown late lead), @MSU (collapse), NEB (…Nebraska).

Hard to see them stringing wins together down the stretch with so many tough games still ahead.

The “good” news is that losing at home to Nebraska was enough to bump up the Huskers’ NET and making it “only” a Q3 loss. But I have to agree, I don’t see PSU getting enough wins against their remaining schedule to be able to make a serious at-large case. They really needed to win both games last week.

Yeah, I think the voter bias has an interesting factor. You could easily make a case that there are zero guards in the top ten players in the league.

Other then Ayo you mean??

The POY is a guard

Oops. Yes obviously Ayo. You could make a case that there’s only one guard in the top ten players in the league

That’s a logical place to start, but obviously there are inefficient guys on bad teams like Henry and Allen in the top ten.

Ayo, Garza are locks.

Then it is a free for all with Carr, Kofi, TJD, Liddell, Livers, Wagner, Dickinson, Washington, and Weiskamp. My hot take is that Livers will get the senior bump from the media and since he is scoring consistently. Dickinson will lose out a bit due to the other bigs in the league, and Wagner will lose out because he doesn’t have that highlight game yet. Not how I would pick it…but guessing

Good news is that if we keep playing well and have some highlights head to head with these guys it all works out.

I think this is spot on. If I had to guess right now, Garza, Ayo, TJD, and Liddell make both media/coaches and then Livers gets the last media spot and Wagner gets the coaches. Cockburn is the one I’m not so sure about leaving out, he might be ahead of TJD.

Cockburn has to be on the first team, IMO.
