Pretty sure history shows the exact opposite, i.e. teams that are so one sided are more prone to being upset early.

Here’s the same table for U-M:

Do you know why 2014 Michigan isn’t on this list? Looks like their AdjO was 123.9 and AdjD was 100.5.

EDIT: Maybe it’s the tempo? 2014 M was 61.0

These are the default weights, and stylistically that team scored very differently (no post-up guy, no offensive boards, etc.)

If you remove all the four factors, you still don’t get Michigan. If you remove tempo too, you get:

Thanks for the detailed response. Seems like I need to spend some time with this Torvik tool, very useful. It’s interesting that when you remove tempo and just pull teams that were similarly strong on offense but weak on defense the result is much better in terms of NCAA Tournament performance.

I’m amazed that Iowa could hold anyone to 0.70 ppp in a game…

It’s probably just hard to find teams that fit that description so you’re left with every great offense that had a good to mediocre defense. Like 2018 Nova was 11th in AdjD. 2015 Wisconsin was 35th. That’s still miles better than Iowa.

Would be helpful if he could show ā€œsimilarity scoresā€ like he does with players

Those Creighton and Missouri teams were in the 100s of Def AdjE so probably the closes comparisons and they were not successful tourney teams.

The positive comps for them in that area are 2015 ND and 2014 Michigan

I think it has to be Carr. That being said, I’m with the people who wouldn’t want him on my team.

The All Conference team isn’t beholden to positions, so 2 guards is not a requirement. Having said that, Carr has had a good season, the final 1 minute of last nights game not withstanding

Only two teams not to make the second weekend in the list was the Kansas team that fell to Ali Farokhmanesh and the Louisville team that lost to one of the most entertaining Michigan teams we’ve had.

I do think that the ā€œsimilar seedā€ criteria throws these lists off a bit…

I don’t think this ever got posted but Beilein interviewing Painter is great. We even get a Manny Harris-Chris Kramer discussion

One of the things I remember about that game was thinking Donovan Mitchell was good but would never have thought he would be a star in the NBA within 3 years.

B1G Basketball is Dan Gallagher and I’m Alex Forrest. Nothing will keep me away from the second half of this contest. Nothing, Dan.

Maryland’s late-game strategy is certainly…interesting
