Austin Davis Commits to Michigan

Where is Kevin Huerter when you need him?

Iā€™d still be surprised if Michigan doesnā€™t add a PG and a wing in 15/16 combined.

The question is what level of player are we talking about?

I donā€™t understand the timing of this. Didnā€™t seem like Davis would blow up that much over the summer. And even of he did, it would probably not be to the level that would make him a hard pull. We could have probably waited til October to offer him and still get him after our roster situation is more clear. Confused by this. I think in a month or two, this will make a little more sense, but not fully.

FWIW ā€¦ Davis did play well last weekend. 2016 C Austin Davis impresses in Dallas

A number of Big Ten teams sent coaches to watch Davis play for the Michigan Mustangs in this weekendā€™s Adidas Uprising series in Dallas. He averaged 12 points and six rebounds in four games, a performance that caught coachesā€™ attention.

ā€œHe just gets [stuff] done,ā€ said one assistant coach who watched Davisā€™ 16-point, 10-rebound, three-block game against the Compton Magic.

Davis isnā€™t the most athletic player or elite in any one area, but heā€™s a productive all-around player. He showed soft hands with the ball, and good touch on his hook shots. A handful of his points against the Magic came in 1-on-1 battles against Ike Anigbogu, one of the best post defenders on the Adidas circuit. Davis flashed good footwork on a hook shot against Anigbogu, and also beat him on the block a couple times.

On multiple occasions during the weekendā€™s games, Davis got the ball just outside the paint and patiently worked around a defender into the paint to score. He also scored several times in in back-to-the-basket situations, putting the ball on the floor and finishing nicely.

Davis has a couple areas for improvement. He shot just 2-for-9 from the foul line in the tournament and averaged three fouls per game. He could be a bit smarter on defense, and he needs to do a better job of going straight up instead of leaning in to contest shots. But he is still a solid defender in man-to-man situations. Quicker guards got by him a couple times, and he gave up a couple buckets in zone defense but still forced players into uncomfortable shots and won on the defensive glass.

Coming into the tournament, Davis wanted to prove he could run the floor better. He did just that and showed consistent energy.

ā€œJust showing that I can run with AAU, itā€™s a whole different game of basketball [than high school], and just playing against the higher competition,ā€ Davis said. ā€œRunning the court was definitely one of my biggest things.ā€

Matt Stainbrook was a MAC player firstā€¦He turned into a high level player a few years laterā€¦ Xavier wouldnā€™t have taken him right out of HS.

Maybe another Graham Brown.

If Williams comes this year, he becomes your PG of the future. If not, Irvin leaves early and you get Winston or some other PG in 2016. Worst case scenario, you take the top PG recruit in 2017 and hand him the keys to a car that is loaded and experienced.

Who on here likes the way or has been impressed with Donnalā€™s play? Seeā€™s any sort of potential there?

You say that as if we can actually have a realistic shot at Winston or a top PG in 17. It doesnā€™t even appear that is possible with the way we are recruiting these days

Here a blast from the past, did Beilein just make the Biefeldt(highly productive high motor big) over Nance (less productive but more athletic & bigger potential big) mistake again (Davis over Edwards).

I donā€™t see Kenny Williams as a PG. More of the wing category.

Winston is going to MSU. That would be a major surprise if not.

ā€œBeilein just inā€™t a good recruiter.ā€ Well, he has put more guys in the NBA in the last 6 years than Izzo has in 20. And some of them were relatively unheralded. What people mean when they say this is that he isnā€™t landing the top-ranked recruits during the last two years.

Who knows, this MAY be a bad move. Bad is obviously going to be somewhat more relative than the initial negative reaction from fans if Davis was blowing up and Izzo and Ryan were on him, but letā€™s say it IS bad. Even if itā€™s a bad move thereā€™s still something else in the wind, something that Beilein knows that we donā€™t. Occamā€™s Razor might suggest that itā€™s a combination of two thingsā€“Beilein deciding that he has to have more frontcourt presence, and someone else is leaving. . . or not coming.

Iā€™ll tell you what, Iā€™m not a huge fan of the potential fit between Williams and UM, but if he wants to come, at this rate PLEASE com on down. Im down for any player that has decent athleticism and can move his feet on D at this point.

So hereā€™s the thing, EVERY single guy JB has put in the league from UM has been an ESPN top 100 player out of HS. So that should tell you how important recruiting is.

JB canā€™t recruit high level talent out of HSā€¦JB DEVELOPSā€¦and finds right fits for his offenseā€¦he did this at WVUā€¦ Guys like Gansey, Pittsnogle, Herber, Young etcā€¦

He gets the most out of his players skill wiseā€¦ Now if you took his player development and applied it to high end recruitsā€¦We would be a top 5 program every year.

I agree that the results of the players are what are important not how ranked they were. I agree that people are talking about the last 2 years. But I know I for one started to get a bit underwhelmed in 13 and then I started saying, well letā€™s look at the next guy we sign. And then the nextā€¦and I havenā€™t seen a lot to be encouraged about (Iā€™m optimistic with Teske) and the schollies get used up and the balance of the roster is oddā€¦we donā€™t KNOW the kidā€™s going to be good and we have needs with available schollies.

Well this just confirms my fears about the state of recruiting particularly the 2016 class. Donā€™t expect any elite players any time soon. The 2012-13 classes were an aberration as was the Final Four run.

Boom. I like the Pick up.
