Assistant Coaching Staff Rumors & Discussion

There was some information I read about the practice philosophy of Coach Martelli and they talked about several one on one drills he did with his players. Not just “OK guys, go play one on one with your matchup,” but several different ways of attacking one on one in drill form.

I, frankly, as an old coach, really enjoyed reading about his practice philosophies, seeing a “practice plan” that he wrote up and presented to a coaches clinic, and watching some video of him conducting practice.

I got chills watching that clip. Excited about having Phil on board in Ann Arbor!

Kinda surprised Patrick Beilein’s name wasn’t thrown around (or was it?). I see that he just picked up a new gig this offseason, but, still. Maybe this move would be solving some of our worries about having a solid backbone of x’s and o’s.

That’d be a weird situation, and it’d be very un-Beileinian to do.

One tough-timing departure leading to another.

Patrick’s a D-I head coach now. He probably won’t be taking any more assistant jobs.

Well, everyone who was panning Howard for not having his staff in place last week should feel a little more at ease now that things appear to be finalized — at least in terms of those who can impact the players right now (Coach Sanderson & the training staff) and those who can recruit when the evaluation period opens on June 13.

They need someone recruiting Jalen Wilson Immediately, if he’s gone and the roster as it is now next year will be a battle just to make the tournament

The main recruiter for Wilson has to Juwan, doesn’t it?

He is on his official at UNC right now. It was reported that Juwan will be at his home later this week.

Or Saddi as the holdover from the staff he committed to?

Odds are high Michigan will add 1, if not 2, more scholarship bodies to the roster for next season. Whether it is Wilson or Wagner re-entering the fold or some new name from Martelli’s connections or someone with a tie to Howard/Eisley…tough to nail down the specifics this quickly. But safe to presume additions are on the way.

It’s Wilson, and/or Wagner. There aren’t any other 19’s out there to target that would be worth a scholarship. There aren’t really and Grad Transfers available to us either at this point. Not really safe to assume anything this late, it’s no better than 50/50 they add anyone for next season

There are others out there in the Class of ‘19. There are Class of ‘20 reclassification options. There are a lot of players still in the transfer portal.

Yes, Wilson & Wagner appear to be the biggest names Michigan has the best chances of getting. Nah’shon Hyland, last I saw, still hasn’t committed anywhere (and I believe Martelli was in on him at St Joe’s). Perhaps a few other kids Martelli was recruiting could flip in to Michigan targets? Might not be 4* game-changers, but could be rotational options. Not sure what kids in the transfer portal were recruited by Martelli in the past & may have a greater interest now that he has the Michigan name attached to him? Don’t know how hardship waivers could play out. A lot of uncertainty.

But some people on here want to be doom-and-gloom through the whole process. First it was bashing AD Manuel. Then bashing Coach Howard for not having a staff together on a fan’s timeline. Now it’s throwing in the towel on any roster additions.

No, I don’t think so. Howard has to sell Wilson on what his vision for the team is, how he plans to use him and how much he wants Wilson.

I don’t know how Saddi can do any of that as well. It’s helpful that Saddi has been retained. It’s nice to have some continuity. I’m sure he can fill Wilson in on what Juwan is like as a person, but the head coach needs to be the closer generally. In this case, he just has to be.

I agree, some other targets may well pop up. It’s not too late for a target to reclassify, particularly a Canadian. Good point about transfers knowing Martelli.

I’ve given up on Hyland as a 2019 recruit. The disparity between his talent and recruiting profile sure makes it look like coaches know he won’t qualify. Michigan must have looked at his transcripts before they stopped recruiting him. The administration would not be happy if Juwan forced them to reject his first recruit. I know mid-majors are still recruiting him. Could be they’re showing him love in hopes of getting him after a prep year. Maybe hoping for a long shot.

One Canadian who has said for awhile he was looking at reclassing is Addison Patterson, top 50 kid who we were not mentioned with previously. He is at one of the prep school factories out West so who knows but one name that talked about it previously.

I’m not a doom and gloom guy, but it’s June. There isn’t some magical list of high major quality players that haven’t signed somewhere already. 99.9% of guys have already signed. It’s extremely likely that the list of options is Wilson, Wagner… If it was earlier in the process I’d agree that Martelli or Juwan might have some connections, but most kids are signed and about ready to head out to their schools. Also, it’s a waste of a scholarship to take a guy just for the sake of taking a guy if he isn’t a Michigan quality player. I would be ecstatic with either Wilson or Wagner, but if they don’t come then I’d rather roll with 10 scholarships and let Juwan go big in the 2020 class.
