Assistant Coaching Staff Rumors & Discussion

You all have convinced me it would be great if Juwan had this guy for his counsel; hope it’s really happening.

Silverblue, thanks for posting your research into Phil Martelli. By most accounts, he is an upstanding individual and great coach who is widely held in high esteem. My repost of bebopson’s comment was meant to respond to Dylan’s comment that he did not know where some of the concerns about Martelli on the forum were coming from. I have to admit, however, that the link bebopson provided did create some concern in my mind as well. Your thorough and well articulated response just before Dylan’s post took my doubt away. I think we would be fortunate to get Phil Martelli as an assistant coach.

So is Martelli hired or not

Can the coaches work with the guys on court right now? If not when does that start?

The fall, I think.

Isn’t that one of the things that makes Jon Sanderson, (and keeping him on) so valuable? That he’s able to work with the athletes nearly every day now?

Yeah definitely

I always wonder if it’s permissable for him to slip the guys some reading material from the coaches.

Obviously the kids are going to be in runs together all summer but no coaches.

I believe that the coaches can work with individual players two hours per week as long as the student is enrolled in the summer school. There was a rule change to allow this back in 2012.

Thanks, that’s what I was thinking but didn’t know if it started now or when summer school starts

Warde’s AD sure doesn’t seem to have many leaks. 4 asst names obviously arose last wk — and Saddi was in full gear at the presser.

But ZILCH about who’s actually in negotiations…

Not sure where the hell this thread went over the weekend. Wasn’t around much… Guess I have to do some clean up.

@k06em01 What do you mean by all the uncertainty? Saddi and Martelli are two spots and Howard Eisley appears to be the frontrunner for the third spot. Have not heard as much on Eisley but would be shocked if Saddi and Martelli are not two of the three assistants.

BUT, you have to give k06em01 credit for getting the thread back on track, right?!?

By the way, I’m glad you’re expressing confidence in the potential Martelli hire because I’m so superstitious I’m afraid by posting so much about Martelli, I’m going to jinx it!

No worries Dylan, threads have a life of their own. For me, the meandering journey the threads take is half the fun.

It’s interesting how we sometimes get two or three distinct conversations going on one thread. You really have to stay on your toes! Adds a little variety to an otherwise sometimes boring life!

I am also trying to refrain myself from getting too excited about the prospect of bringing Martelli in. He would be the perfect hire in my opinion. The yin to his Howard’s yang. Howard is the more hip, young guy who relates better to the kids, and Martelli brings all the head coaching experience that Howard lacks and then some. He would really be able to show him the ropes. With how much there is for Howard to learn, it’s hard to imagine someone better at his side.

Oh, I hope I don’t jinx this thing!

This is who we get if Coach Juwan Howard is able to close the deal and bring Phil Martelli from his beloved to Philly to coach with him here at Michigan!

EDIT: Sorry, thought I had the video of Martelli saying, “I WILL coach again, and I’ll be juiced and I’ll be on that floor with young kids and I’ll be telling them, Now go cut down those nets!”

Maybe this will work.

May have missed this. How do we sum up Martelli from offensive x&o strategy?

He probably won’t be in charge of the play calling… but St Joes was a lot of iso ball, let your wings and guards attack their defenders 1 on 1

That’s a great question, poppinfresh. I’ve found videos of practice sessions, practice plans, basketball camps, and material indicating that Coach Martelli is a VERY well organized coach, but I think all coaches at the high DI level have extremely organized and efficient practices. I DO think he may have some Beilein tendencies in the way organizes and runs practices, at least it seems so to me.

For me, though, I’m more excited about Martelli from the stand point of him being such an experienced and well respected long time DI coach, the kind of man he is, and the value he would be able to provide Coach Howard as HE develops his offensive and defensive philosophies.

Seems like Eisley is a lock, assuming at this point it would be a big surprise if he isn’t the third AC?
