Assistant Coaching Staff Rumors & Discussion

When you think of Philly hoops, you think of guards. So in that sense, sure. He has just been a head coach for so long that I’m not really sure how to answer the question. Would you say Beilein is a guards? wings? stretch bigs? shooting? guy.

I would say that his teams generally emphasize attacking guards like a lot of East coast/Philly type teams.

mid-major teams usually are dominated by good guards.

Thanks! With Beilein, I’d say he’s an “offense” and a “player identification” and “development” guy. “Shooting” maybe also fair (I hadn’t thought of Beilein’s training ball for a few years prior to just right now…).

Well, the good ones anyway…

I think of Wilt, Sheed and the Morris twins as well…

Martelli is just a ball coach, sort of a poor mans beilein. That jameer Nelson delonte west team he had was arguably the GOAT mid major team.

Official. Can’t think of a word where he won’t accept. Reliable source as well.

So does mean the Mike Miller news was off base? Can’t imagine hiring both Martelli and Miller, could you?

Beat me to it @goblue23

Arcidiacono, Divincenzo, Moretti. Need Italians to get to the National Title game. Martelli can cross that off the list.

Have to see what Michigan does with the other spot… I guess hypothetically you could hire Miller and Martelli?

Tony is, I believe, the only one who was reporting Miller? He seems pretty surprised by this development on Twitter which is surprising to me because it isn’t really new. Martelli’s name has been out there.

Obviously he has east coast connections that could be very beneficial, but any idea what Martelli is like as a recruiter?

Maybe it’s actually the Memphis Mike Miller! squeal

Most of his kids come from suburban or downtown Philly.

He was a good coach with a ton of experience. I don’t think his appeal is recruiting bonafides.

His connections to the Philly and NE area would be the draw just due to his longevity and status in the area.

Well, if you were looking for a former college head coach to assist Juwan and is available, not sure you can do much better than Martelli. Not sure if there is any connection to Juwan along the way, but Martelli would be a great guy for him to lean on.

Guessing if this happened, Brendan would be pretty excited. Maybe he could be the first ever guest of the Moving Screen pod.

Assume there could be some kind of old school hoops connections between Martelli, Pat Riley, Spoelstra, but not sure. Guys that have been around that long seem to know everyone.

He’s sort of a don brown like hire, due to spending so long in one area he’ll know all of the nooks and crannies to look for guys. Love this hire

Martelli seems like a pure basketball coach. So maybe he’ll enjoy being an assistant. And not gonna find a better college head coaching pedigree than this.

St Joe’s doesn’t exactly pull the best Philly guys, so his connections there seem kind of pointless right? I can’t imagine this opens us up as a destination for elite Philly guys.

Not sure why the connections wouldn’t matter? He probably knows every prep and grassroots coach within 100 miles of Philly and over the last quarter century has recruited some of their kids. That opens doors.

Just because he was recruiting the No. 3 kid on a team a decade ago, doesn’t mean that it won’t matter if he wants to get involved with a top kid now. As long as the kid was treated well.
