Phil Martelli at Michigan is gonna be one hell of a ride. Talk about a culture clash, wonder if Warde really knows what he’s getting himself into
Fair enough. And I think it’s a good hire regardless Hopefully Juwan + Michigan + Connections brings good stuff. Coaching wise I’m sure he’ll be great.
If people wanted an experienced coach as an assistant I cannot think of a better, available specimen of the type. Yeah, he got fired. If he didn’t he wouldn’t be available.
Yeah, I’m not saying Michigan is going to go clean up Philadelphia. Just trying to explain the sort of connections that he’ll have to the area. Those ties are important to build trust and get in the door in different recruitments.
Care to expound, for those less familiar?
From going through St. Joe’s Torvik page, the #1 thing that stands out to me is TO Rate. In the last couple years they have been elite in that area. The rest of the numbers seem to change year to year, looking like he adapts based on personnel. They generally get a lot of 3s up and play at a decent pace.
Warde hired Howard, Howard offers Martelli. FWIW. It isn’t like the AD chooses his basketball coach’s assistant coaches.
Yak had some useful connections and he was only at IL St for a few years. He was never going to get Castleton there, for an example.
Martelli’s firing did not sit well with a lot of people, especially the old schools. Most view it as the new AD’s move to clean the house. I assume that many in the coaching community try to find him a good landing spot, and this is as perfect for Martelli as it is for Michigan. I think that Michigan just got some fans in Philly.
Will be tough to recruit Philadelphia when Nova takes the best kids from there and the greater Atlantic region.
unless the AD is Dave Brandon.
Yeah, I don’t think you will have a class of 4 and 5-star Philly kids, but will probably be involved in a few recruitments in the area.
How psyched is Brendan right now?
While there is a possibility that Martelli does not adjust well to his new role, but I believe that he knows what to expect and is willing to adjust
Yeah it’s not just the high 4 and 5 stars, there’s just a ton of talent in that region. FWIW saint joes was all over nahshon hyland and adrien Nunez before bigger schools made moves. Martelli can evaluate talent.
Don’t we have to see how Hyland and Nunez end up before praising them as talent evaluation hits?
So let’s analyze this potential staff a little bit…
Howard. Great defensive and big man coach. Great talent developer. Great recruiting personality. Great AAU connections. Great shoe connections ~ Jordan/Nike. Great Chicago and Florida connections. NBA connections galore. Milwaukee you hope he could get into. Maybe Minneapolis. Maybe Atlanta.
Sanderson. From a Basketball S&C perspective… as good as it gets at any level. Very big recruiting pitch there. A guy all the NBA teams want.
-
Martelli. He’d probably have more college coaching and recruiting experience than any other assistant in the entire country. That’s what everyone said Juwan’d need the most, right? Recruiting connections — remember, 5-stars play for the same HS and AAU coaches as mid-major prospects. Philly, New England (Boston/MA, CT, RI, NH, VT, ME), New York, New Jersey, DC, MD, Northern VA, DE, PA. I’d bet Martelli knows just about everyone there is to know in the large, talent rich northeast region.
-
Miller. Probably about as proven a talent-developer, in general, as you’re ever going to see in an NCAA assistant’s chair. Tons of experience as a college HC and assistant as well.
-
Eisley. Probably about as good a guard developer and recruiter — presumably, given his background and experience — as you’re going to see on an NCAA bench. Detroit / Perry Watson connections. Offensive guy… who’s played for D’Antoni, Nelson, Popp, Sloan, backed up Stockton for 6yrs.
-
Saddi. Tons and tons of Michigan recruiting experience. Good deal of college coaching experience as well. And for Beilein. Offensive guy. Indiana and Ohio are surprisingly huge NBA talent producers—he’s got a lot of Midwest recruiting connects.
**Only going to get 4/5 ^… but there’s certainly a lot to like.
Things not to like…
-No West Coast or Southwest connects — never really going to be Michigan’s strength anyways.
-Not much NC presence… which is another underrated talent-producing area. Tough place to grab talent anyways (Duke, UNC, etc).
-No real sleazy AAU/shoe guys.
FWIW, not sure this is as “firm” as Jensen reported. If it becomes a firm offer, I think it will become a new assistant coach.
Reading between the lines, this is the experienced head coach BQ knew of that he couldn’t report, I imagine.
Agreed. I’m fine with Miller, but Martelli is a no brainer IMO.
