I don’t have a subscription to The Athletic, but The Detroit News’ Tony Paul offered the opinion on Twitter. He doesn’t usually get into rumor mongering, so safe to presume there’s a legitimate contact giving him this impression?
Goodman reported Eisley as a candidate last week. There’s been Mike Miller talk, Phil Martelli talk, etc. People might not usually throw out speculation, but people can also report that something is happening for sure if they wanted to. No one actually reported Miller is being hired for example, it was prefaced with “don’t be surprised if” or something similar. Not saying he’s not a real candidate but important nuance.
getting two assistant from Knicks
organization does not seem to be a savvy move. If Martelli leaving Philly rumor is real, i don’t see a reasonable landing spot for him at D2 and D3 level. maybe it is Martelli+Miller because Eisley does not want to move and recommended Miller. My only concern about Martelli+Miller is the their ages.
One of the biggest drawbacks to hiring Juwan was his lack of experience coaching at the collegiate level. The best way to work around that was this idea that he would hire a staff heavy on college experience. If the assistant coaches going into next season are Howard Eisley, Mike Miller, and Saddi Washington (as is currently being rumored), that would be one assistant with no experience coaching or recruiting at the college level, one assistant who has been coaching in the pros for the past 6 years, and Saddi. Would a staff like that really alleviate the concerns about Juwan’s ability to transition to the college game?
Martelli and Miller are both great hires. I’d prefer Miller bc for the player development. Would be curious if Martellis recruiting chops as an assistant. I’d prefer an ace recruiter for the other spot resaedless of whether it’s Martelli or Miller.
In his Q/A this morning on the Athletic.com (subscribe–its worth it IMO) he cited earlier reports that Eisley was under consideration (and confirmed that he was under consideration) and more or less predicted that Eisley would be on the staff along with Washington.
Martelli may or may not be a great recruiter but his deep connection in the mid atlantic and north east does not hurt the recruiting.
Paul is the guy that took literal message board bait last year in regards to Rick Pitino to Detroit, to be fair. So I’m skeptical when it comes to him, but other people I trust are more reliable mentioning the same thing (or similar things at least) lead me to believe the group will be Miller, Eisley, and Washington.
Fair enough.
Agreed, with that staff only 1 member has recruited in the last 6 years and 2 with absolutely no experience. Wonder since we haven’t heard much about Haynes if he is still being considered as well.
A proven recruiter would be a missing piece, don’t think it is realistic but Ryan Miller from TCU (who was on the list from the Miami Heat guy) or someone similar in nature would be a huge pickup.
Who knows if he would run the offense but from the research I have done mike miller is a triangle offense guy.
Well he spent two years coaching the G League affiliate of Phil Jackson Knicks, who were mandated to run the triangle.
and Eisley was also with that organization during that time, are we really going run the triangle? so much for a modern nba offense…
What I’m saying is that I’m not sure if Miller is a triangle guy or he was made to be a triangle guy.
It looks like Eisley was hired after Jackson was fired. He also worked for Doc Rivers and Scottie Brooks.
Supposedly he ran it at eastern Illinois and Tex winter who is the triangle offense god is one of his main mentors
After learning this, I am completely out on Mike Miller
Yeahhhh… I’m out on the triangle offense
Just because he runs the triangle offense does not mean we would
EDIT but It looks like a moot point if we get Martelli
Sure, but if you’ve run a triangle offense in the past 5 years, I don’t trust your offensive mind to touch the players.
