my bad.
Martelli all the way
College lifer
More accomplished
Running an a10 program is much closer to running a program like um than what Miller ran
In college b-ball recently and understands and likely has a plan for all the changes coming this summer to recruiting
Heavy ties to the mid Atlantic and northeast, an area no one else on the staff does. Its also an area um can have a lot of success in.
I guess I’d prefer Martelli, but I see no issue with Miller.
Any insight in their respective offensive coaching prowesses? (G league film review time?). Kidding aside, I think Martelli’s more recent college experience (even if mixed success) would make him my slight preference, unless Miller has some AAU or other recruiting connection i don’t know about.
No clue which I would prefer, my question is does the 3rd spot change depending on which guy it is? Miller has college experience but it has been awhile so perhaps they go a different route away from an NBA guy like Eisley to a more experienced recent recruiter?
Is the expectation the staff is in place for the presser tomorrow?
I would not expect the staff to be finalized by tomorrow. Maybe selected and reported but I would be shocked if ink was dry and background checks were complete. Usually this takes a bit of time to announce a newly hired assistant coach.
Thanks Dylan, I assumed just seemed like a lot of moving and shaking today. Who would have thought two weeks ago we are talking about Martelli as an assistant coach here.
Yeah, we could know who the staff is, I suppose. I just don’t think it would be officially announced.
True, if you don’t mind me asking who do you prefer?
Hmm, tough Q. Can see the pros for either. I think it might depend if Howard Eisley is the third assistant … An Eisley/Miller duo would worry me a bit given the lack of heavy college experience. Don’t really think either is going to be a recruiting ace, which I think you could make a case for hiring.
FWIW Wojo just all but confirmed Miller is being hired as an assistant on 97.1. A second guy that doesn’t throw out rumors. When everyone was saying Howard is the next coach he kept saying it’s not official they are still negotiating and there’s a big difference to one side of the party if it’s a 4 or 5 year deal.
yeah, thats a good point. BQuinn sure seemed to think Eisley was going to end up in one of the slots this morning–but that was also before a lot of the Miller smoke. Eisley plus Miller would put a lot of pressure on Howard and Washington to pull a lot of recruiting weight, IMO.
Dylan, could you suggest a few possible options that you think might be ace recruiters? Rod Strickland was the only one I’ve seen mentioned that struck me as likely, although not so likely to get past the vetting process.
To be honest, I’m not sure. Maybe not a proven ace recruiter but someone who is a) young and b) connected to the grassroots circuit would be ideal.
Why do people think Eisley wouldnt be a great recruiter??
From Detroit. Jalen Rose/Fab Five connects. Perry Watson connects. Played 13 yrs in the NBA with 8 teams. Spent the last 6 yrs as an assistant in the NBA. Played PG for: Mike D’Antoni, Don Nelson, Jerry Sloan (John Stockton’s backup for 6 yrs), Gregg Popovich, George Karl, Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Dunleavy.
Who else would I want to play for if I was an aspiring NBA PG?
He definitely could be. We just don’t know. The amount of unknown in this whole situation is quite staggering and that isn’t going to change whoever is hired as an assistant coach.
Yeah the DUI’s will be an issue
I would imagine rumors will start flying at a faster rate tonight as some people try to get out in front of tomorrow’s press conference. A certain subset of media like to be able to say they “broke news” before it became mainstream.
(WoJo, FWIW, is not usually one of those people…nor is Dylan)
Does anyone have where Brendan Quinn said something about Eisley being hired? Thought I read that but can’t find it now.
