Assistant Coaching Staff Rumors & Discussion

That’s reading in pretty far, but okay. G league COY sounds extremely good to me as I try to gauge how it will play with recruits. It’s having people who can show you the path, and the twists and turns along it that often prove valuable to kids.

I’m a little concerned because–with the Saddi Washington thread–this is the second time today that I’m finding more calm, thoughtful reactions to these emerging developments at mgoblog than I am here–say it ain’t so!!!

True, they’re bad records. His most recent history is much better in the G-league. Hard to say what’s more relevant, maybe neither makes any difference for an assistant.

The plus side is that the level of players he’s been working with in the G-league with be closer to what we’ll have at Michigan. I think the main role of an HC there is to teach, not to install his system, more like being an assistant in the NBA with talent a step below.

In sports, with coaching and playing, so many times it’s about finding your fit. There’s thousands of people out there vying for a small number of spots. I still thank my stars that my daughter’s soccer coach saw how well she reads the field and forced her to become a midfielder; she was terrified of the responsibility, but it’s gonna be her ticket, if she continues to want it, to a college scholarship.

Yes, I’m pretty confident that this Miller is going to be good working with our players. He might also be good at identifying prospects. I just hope he’ll be a good recruiter too. At least he’s done it before.

I’m counting on Juwan to be our best recruiter.

I don’t think this is a bad hire at all. I just don’t think it’s a “homerun hire” … probably closer to solid double in my opinion?

Nothing wrong with it. And if Miller’s a strong communicator and a strong development coach, that plays a valuable role on a staff. He’s got history at the collegiate level so NCAA restrictions shouldn’t be difficult for him. Unclear how he is as a recruiter or what potential recruiting ties he has. Unclear what position group he’d specialize in with Michigan, but seeing how Saddi seems solid with posts & rumors about Eisley (PG as a player) being in play, I’m guessing Miller would work with the wings?

Sanderson with Saddi and Miller is a comfortable start to a staff.

So where are we with this Miller hire? Is this likely to happen or is it just speculation?

How many assistants have we succeeded with that either were or became underwhelming head coaches? Bacari, Lavall, Donlon, Dunn.

This is a fine hire!

Tony Paul doesn’t usually “rumor monger” so if he’s reporting something as likely to happen, I’d take that to mean he has a really strong source on the situation. He gives himself a little bit of wiggle room, but my guess from Tony Paul’s tweets is it’s just down to final contract dotting “i”s and crossing “t”s?

Yeah. No argument there

Nova/UVA/etc. approach vs One-and-Done approach

-Howard’s going to be a great defensive coach.
-He’s going to be a great big man coach.
-He’s going to be a great recruiter (in general, and…) of big men.
-He’s going to be a great developer of big men.
-Eisley’s going to be a great offensive coach.
-He’s going to be a great guard coach.
-He’s going to be a great recruiter of guards.
-He’s going to be a great developer of guards.
-Saddi (not Yak) was Beilein’s #1 asst. Presumably, this was for a reason.
-He’s not a defensive specialist, as Howard the HC already is… as Yak is.
-He brings continuity. A pre-existing relationship with Juwan. Loads of college coaching and recruiting experience. And quite a bit of college coaching and recruiting talent as well.
-Miller is an excellent developmental guy. Excellent (!!). He has a lot of college coachinng and recruiting experience as well… no big school opportunity yet.
-Sanderson is about as good a basketball-physical-development guy as there is, at any level.

The one-and-done rule is ending in 2022 at the earliest. The approach, in its existence, has resulted in only one championship — Calipari’s 2012 Anthony Davis squad.

I hope Howard will be taking the approach of more 2, 3 and 4 yr players. Recruiting well, though maybe not winning any 247 awards. Developing talent. Coaching well. Retaining players. And bringing cold-steel experienced well-oiled machines into March’s.

And kicking the shit out of future MSU HC Dane Fife.

2015 Duke also won a championship with the one and done approach. Both 2012 Kentucky and 2015 Duke had 3 freshmen stars mixed in with upperclassmen.

I went with Miller. Like the player development aspects and the ties to the NBA. Like the fact there is a motivation aspect to to move up.

Martelli probably good to stick around, but is he a grinder on the recruiting trail, kinda like the late 30s-40 range for assistants.

Either is fine with me. So, I guess, whichever one has a better relationship with Juwan (or meshes with Juwan’s vision for the program the best).

Miller is 54 FWIW.

First off, you left off the most impressive parts of Miller’s resume. Second, if we were hiring a head coach you are probably right. But we are not hiring a head coach.
