This is pretty cool, aside from it being a blowout, but we’ve got Bob Costas, Doug Collins, and the Czar of the telestrator Mike Fratello calling the Spurs/76ers game on NBC with Jim Grey on the sidelines. Plus the old graphics.
However, Bob Costas did just say “Two great Dicks.” on air. There was more but that will be the sound bite.
Because it will matter for post-season awards for your boy, progress to 65 games (79.3%). (for what players I’m addressing here, I’m using the basketball reference NBA MVP tracker and combining with my own judgement for who would get more MVP votes than Cade):
Cade: 54 of 60 games played (90%) - he needs to play 11 of the final 22, seems simple assuming no major injury.
Wembanyama: 47/61 games played (77%). He needs to play 18 of the final 21 games. 12 of his 14 missed games were due to an injury, so its not as if he’s regularly on load management, and he’s played their last 26 games. No guarantee here, and he may miss it, but I’d lean towards thinking he gets to 65. This one though really seems to come down to whether the Spurs decide there’s something to play for in the final couple games of the year. That said, they know he’s a lock for all-NBA and probably top-3 MVP voting if he gets to 65, so I’d think they’d be inclined to get him there all things being equal.
Shai: 51/63 played (81%). He needs to play 14 of the final 19 games to qualify. Generally an iron man, he missed 9 consecutive games recently to throw this into some sort of doubt. He came back and played 2 games, but missed last night as OKC waxed the hapless Bulls without him, in what seems like classic “load management”. I’d lean towards thinking he gets there, but it’s clear they’re taking a light touch with him (they should), so some doubt here.
Jokic - 46 of 62 games (74.2%). Would need to play 19 of the final 20. Every single game he’s missed was consecutive due to injury, he hasn’t taken one “load management” game off the whole year. There’s a way he gets there, but given how tight this is, I’d guess he doesn’t get to 65.
Doncic - for the record, if Doncic hadn’t missed a game, I would not consider him over Cade, but the model has him higher, and there’s obviously a chance. 49 of 61 games played (80.3%). Will need to play 16 of 21 to qualify for post-season awards. Unlike Victor, Shai, and Jokic, there are a few random one-off load management DNP’s on his game log here, his longest convalescence was 4 games. The Lakers are 2 games above the play-in and 1.5 games short of hosting a first round series, so there are definitely things to play for…I’d think they’ll be less inclined to give him a day off. My assumption is that he makes the cut.
Jaylen Brown - 54 of 61 games played (88.5%). Needs 11 of final 21. Again, barring catastrophic injury there’s basically no way he doesn’t get there. I personally wouldn’t consider him over Cade for a moment, but voters love narrative and lord knows he has a pretty obvious narrative, and the vast ocean of “why is nobody talking about Jaylen Brown??” articles are eye-raising. I almost didn’t include him, but there’s so much buzz around him, it’s silly not to.
So again - agnostic of games played, I’d probably have Cade 4th on my list (after Shai, Jokic, Victor, above Doncic and Brown). Cade deserves MVP consideration in his own right regardless of the games played situation, but I think it’s a lock that at least one of Shai/Jokic/Victor doesn’t get to 65, so I’d guess Cade has a strong chance at top 3 MVP voting, and a virtual lock on All-NBA first team.
One other guy worth mentioning here is Tyrese Maxey - don’t think he’d get over any of these dudes but hes played 364 more minutes than the next person on this list (Cade). Given quality and how big this lift is, just worth mentioning.
Regarding this, I saw it reported around the NBA Cup that he gets an additional game added as an exemption bc he played in the NBA Cup Finals game (which doesn’t count towards the regular season). It’s a small detail but he can technically he miss a 4th game and still qualify for awards.
that’s interesting! strikes me as fair
No more pregame naps for Barnes
Been there. It happens.
I saw this post on social media, couldn’t find it again, so went and found the numbers.
@kturnup ‘s Hawks:
Last 62 games: 31-31
Last 90 games: 45-45
Last 134 games: 67-67
Last 348 games: 210-210
Last 1,570 games: 785-785
Last 3,880 games: 1940-1940
Last 5,790 games: 2894 - 2896
Last 6,000 games: 2,997 - 3,003
One more wild thing - the Hornets have won their last 6 games by an average margin of 24 points.
Did you know the single best 5-man lineup in the NBA that has played 200+ minutes is:
Lamelo Ball, Miles Bridges, Moussa Diabate, Kon Kneuppel, and Brandon Miller - +27 points per 100 possessions in 303 minutes.
A masterclass in mediocrity
this is the fastest one of these has ever gone, right?
I think so for the NBA. Some NFL guys have come back in a few months, but they never look the same. KD has looked really good since his return a few years back and he was 4 years older when he tore his achilles. Not sure how any of the other guys have played after their return in recent years.
I don’t think expectations are sky high for Tatum, which is good. Most people that I’ve heard talk about him are expecting him to be an upgrade on their current role players and give them 20-25 minutes as a supercharged reserve for the rest of the year. Anything more is fantastic for him
yeah, they’ve obviously been good - its probably not in their best interested for him to come in and try to be Jayson Tatum (next year, sure)
The 348: 210-210 game part is off.
Wemby flops his way into poking Holland in the eye. He didn’t return. Hopefully, it’s nothing serious.
Must have had one of those running dreams.
You’re pumping so hard but you

No Ausar (bad ankle) or Cade (likely just a day off) vs. the Nets tonight.
Hopefully, this is a Get Right game for Daniss. Since signing his contact, this has been what he’s done in those 10 games:
.284 from the floor
.176 from 3
.667 on FT’s
And he’s averaging 0.9 assists vs. 1.0 turnovers while being a net -32 on the floor over that time.
Caris could use a good game too.
Yeah Cade is likely gonna sit a couple games the next week. Tonight starts a back to back and there’s another on the 12th & 13th
They blew a 23 point lead to Brooklyn. I am not angry but i am concerned.
