When you’re dealing with a fringe max player it can happen. Teams won’t be lining up to offer him the max, and even if so the supposed destinations don’t have the money to do it. Regardless he is restricted so Suns will match I think. They just didn’t want to pay over what other people would offer or give the extra year cause their owner is cheap

Yup but it’d be nice to dream. Their pitch would be Cade first and foremost and an opportunity to play a bigger role on offense.
Pistons will never be a FA destination which is partly why cap space is almost irrelevant except when they need to trade for an established star. No argument from me on this position.
I would be more than willing to give an extra year for Ayton. Get lucky in this year’s draft and figure out Jerami Grant’s situation and now we’re cooking as far as the starting lineup.
Paul can’t last much longer. I’m like 95% they match the RFA offer and go from there. If they lose him early, well, the team will be in trouble at the PG spot and they can let him go.
That’s not how I would play it, mind you. Booker/Ayton/Bridges is a pretty good core.
They aren’t, but players want to be paid and the Pistons have the most cap space this summer. Unfortunately, two of their top targets - Ayton and Brunson - both happen to be restricted FAs so their deals can just be matched. It’s a pretty weak crop of FAs this summer, especially for unrestricted FAs. Unfortunate timing for the Pistons to have the cap space advantage over the rest of the league.
I’m convinced Ayton is feeling resentment for the Suns for not being deemed Max worthy after helping the team to a NBA Finals. Whether he wants to go to the Pistons is another matter.

It is wild to me that when you click on the latest Ja Morant highlight, there are people sniping about how he’s not that good. How could literally anyone like basketball and not be in awe of the highlight reel.

If the Suns are unwilling to pay Ayton the max or don’t want to tack on an extra year, it’s possible that they may not match. Can’t hurt to try. Ayton would be my #1 target for the Pistons.

It’s more the idea that the Suns are able to offer him more than any other team via the rookie max extension but they cose not to do that. I think it is likely they match a Max offer but we’ll see. Sign and trade maybe?
