2022 NBA Draft Discussion

Carry? He played four years so makes sense to move on.

Rollins should be a second round pick I think.

Ramey would be a nice player in an offensive system with a clue. /cough

No idea how good Ramey can be. He’s never played for anybody who has ever coached offense before, so I think you can squint and see how he could put together the same season Devante just managed. But neither his TS% nor his AST/TO is inspiring. Seen him play way more than I wish I had and my recollection is he’s the kind of guy who looks the part for a few possessions and then takes an early clock midranger or throws a no chance pass and you’re pretty out on him.

Seems like a decent fit so ofc also seems like a guy we’d get outbid for.

Hard to get that excited about him and doesn’t seem like much of a fit. I assume he’ll be looking for a role more on the ball despite being much better off of it.

Would basically be a battle at the two for minutes with Bufkin that Ramey would probably win but what does the best case scenario of Ramey look like? A lot of double digit ORtgs on his KenPom profile.

Good catch and shoot guy but feels like you would much rather get a wing shooter than a guard.

He doesn’t have a lot of pick and roll or ISO in his synergy? Or his numbers are just bad? Those Texas offenses have been pretty badly coached so I’m not sure how much is him vs. nobody spending the time making it work.

I think Ramey would be a great fit for us. Solid defender, has played on and off ball (I think). Could slide into the Eli Brooks role just fine I would think. Would he be interested, idk. But he would make our team better than 99% of the available transfers out there.

I’d argue the question is whether he’s good enough to raise your ceiling that you want to recruit over Bufkin.

Or do you get a wing, who can fit into the spots that are open at the 3/4.

He raises our ceiling more than 99% of other options.

We only have 3 guards! But yes if Kobe is threatened then sure don’t do it. But as a program we’re in a crappy spot if we are not allowed to have 4 guards ever moving forward.

Personally I see no reason JL, Kobe, and Ramey couldn’t all play 20+ minutes. Basically give backup PG duties to Ramey/Bufkin, maybe even slide Ramey to the 3 occasionally. Then Jett and Twill handle most of the minutes at the 3/4.

Boom our defense is vastly improved from Jett getting 20 minutes at the 2 and we have another floor spacer. Ceiling raised

Dug should be getting the backup PG minutes, JL is coming in to start at PG. Ramey seems like a guy who will want to go somewhere to get more PG minutes, not less.

If he’s willing to come in and be Chaundee Brown off the bench and just shoot threes, sure he’s a great fit.

He probably has people like Purdue recruiting him to play PG though. That sort of roster is probably more appealing for what he wants.

Yeah as I said if he’s not interested he’s not interested and it doesn’t matter. But I see the fit if he wants it, as described in your middle sentence.

I agree with you and made the same argument when JL was signed but didn’t stop Frankie from bolting. Pretty tough to build any roster around 3 guards when none of them have shown they can play at the B10 level. But this is the world we live in.

I’ve been tempted to start a discussion on what the right recruiting strategy is in this era and whether going after raw 5-stars that are likely to leave no matter what is worth the investment. Then I picture Dylan shredding that thought and pointing out how valuable Houstan and Diabate were even with their struggles as compared to the next tier of recruits. So I’m going to refrain from that and just point out that I think recruiting a diverse collection of players is always good.

What I WILL throw out to the group is this, however… Should we avoid recruiting foreign players in the NIL era? Maybe Houstan and Diabate were going to leave for the NBA no matter what…but Diabate just declared while being a fringe draft pick and almost certainly going to spend a significant time in the G-League instead of staying at Michigan under Juwan. Hunter chose to stay instead of trying the G-League in large part because he’s getting paid. Maybe NIL drives most foreign HS players to other places.

I mean Moussa and Houstan were the 4th and 5th best players on a bubble team

I don’t know that you can draw a line between their season and all five star freshmen but I think it’s fair to say that their performance is a large piece (not all) of the gap between our expectation and final outcome.

Which is not me saying they were bad.

I just don’t really think you can come up with a hard and fast rule for recruiting. You recruit the best players that are interested in your program each year. Then you do it again.

If U-M could do it again, I think you still go after Caleb and Moussa.
