FTR having read it, I think Sam’s diagnosis of Hunter’s D is more or less spot on. I’d really like to see him work on his range of motion. He’s got these super tight hips? hammies? that keep him from getting into a a really athletic stance. He bends at the waist instead and it leaves him off balance.
I see Chet as the clear #1 in this class and would love if the Pistons got him. He’s got multiple elite NBA traits at his size (shooting, rim protection) and multiple good/adequate traits (rebounding, ball handling, passing). His passing is the thing that has really surprised me, which also suggests pretty high IQ.
My biggest concern is what others have pointed out, which is a confusing tendency to disappear or be too passive at time. In the game they lost to St Mary’s, he took only one shot in the last 7 minutes and that was on a putback. In his defense, I thought it was totally bizarre that the team/coaching seemed to make no attempt to get him shots or to feature him in the offense. Which makes me wonder how much of his “passiveness” is on him and how much of it is the team and coach not doing enough to feature him. Those are the types of issues that show up sometimes on a college floor and then completely disappear at the next level.
Yeah it was all fair no doubt. IDK what the answer is really from a plyometric standpoint but his defensive stance is very odd and not ideal
I have trouble evaluating Paolo based on the way he’s used at Duke. Doesn’t feel like we’re seeing everything he can do offensively.
Agree, Duke’s offense is such a mess. I buy Paolo’s shooting though, despite what numbers say. Maybe it’s bias of the games I’ve watched (where he always seems to shoot well) but he looks like a guy who is going to be pretty automatic on open 3-pt shots. He should benefit from NBA spacing.
I have the opposite view on Ivey. I don’t care what the percentages say, I don’t think he has a viable jump shot.
Gonzaga’s offense is pretty basic and they run a ton of continuity stuff rather than sets which I think makes it hard to get specific players in good spots unless they’re extremely adept in the pick and roll. I don’t think that’s a perfect use for Chet? Tho I guess I’m open to being told otherwise.
Also agreed that his IQ will help everything play up. A real basketball player, imo. That said, don’t think the shooting is elite. FT% is good for a big but would guess he tops out around average for the NBA. Maybe it plays better than that bc his height will help him get his shot off.
Also also, it really is interesting the extent to which the criticisms of Chet mirror those of Mobley. Ability to disappear also cropped up for him, along w the body type thing.
I found it suspicious that Banchero waited about 38 minutes to stuff Hauser in a locker. Obviously Duke’s offensive design is laughable too but that raised my eyebrows if you consider motor a real thing.
Maybe it was more of a scout problem than a Banchero problem but he could have abused Hauser all night and Duke could have won by 25.
Mobley was about 25(?) pounds heavier than Chet coming into college and as crazy as it is to say, even he has a bigger frame. Also, again, situation is very important. Chet could go on to a team like the Cavs that might have towering bigs they could pair him up with.
I never know what to think of motor. In some cases I find myself thinking, “well, nobody forced you to play for Cuonzo Martin or whatever”. Now that the G League Ignite is a thing I hope that the kids who just absolutely do not want to play school don’t have to.
Agree and I haven’t watched any Duke all year. I was just astonished that MSU stayed in the game as long as they did with that particular matchup on the floor. But I would be 0% surprised if that just said more about the Duke staff because they played like a CCRB team.
Seems like a spacing problem with Williams always near the basket and the Duke guards and wings don’t seem like catch and shoot types. Even Banchero seems reluctant to just catch-and-shoot. Just a whole team of guys that just want to attack off the dribble.
Banchero makes more sense to me if he’s your 5. He’s not a bankable 4.
Do you mean on defense? He’s versatile enough on offense that he’d be tough to guard at either position.
Yes. It’s definitely a you-are-who-you-can-guard kind of question for me. One reason I like Smith is that he has a very clear position in the league and the right body type for that position. You can’t necessarily say the other three top prospects are a perfect match of body and projected role like Smith is.
But Giannis is a freak athlete and Chet is just an average athlete. That’s not a good comparison IMO.
Trying to come up with good comps for Chet is a futile pursuit.
Only watched him play a few times, but I was like ‘That’s a taller, better, more efficient Franz out there at freaking center’.
It’s a futile pursuit. Chet is skinny but is a good rim protector and can be a connector/finisher. However, he isn’t a great athlete but his wingspan makes up for it. To me, he’s a C who can moonlight as a PF.
So…which guy makes the most sense with Cade? (and to lesser extent Bey?) I’ve kept my fandom pretty local to the B1G this year, so I don’t know what the NBA options are to actually lead to victories for Detroit. Or is that futile because they’re still so far away?
Pistons need a rim-protecting/rim-running center or a backcourt mate to take secondary ball handling responsibilities. So Ivey is probably the best fit. There isn’t really a great guaranteed center in the draft besides maybe Duren
