Well, the cards are on the table for the three squads that were strongest during the season. Beat UCLA Zags and Bears and cut down those nets
Awesome - thanks. I stumbled my way into a fascinating bit of basketball history (Iâve heard of the point shaving scandal but know nothing about it â about to go into a Wiki-hole).
Thereâs a good documentary on it: City Dump: The Story of the 1951 CCNY Basketball Scandal - Wikipedia
The scandal broke the cityâs heart.
Bears are scary but Iâve always hated Jalen Suggs matchup w Mike Smith. Anyway. Letâs just win tonight!
I just saw that Mick Cronin is the highest paid coach remaining in the tournament. The more surprising thing to me is that Mark Few only gets paid 1.9 mil/yr?? Is Few that selfless that he just doesnât care what he gets paid??
I donât know where to find the specifics but Iâm sure the WCC athletic departments arenât exactly rolling in cash. Relative to the power 5 conferences anyway. They donât even have football which is normally the big money maker. Thatâs probably all Gonzaga can afford.
My favorite jerseys forever.
Gonzaga being a private school doesnât have to release the full details of Fews compensation. Itâs possible hes making more.
Gonzagaâs athletic department might not have that much money. The West Coast Conference probably doesnât bring in too much revenue, and they have a small arena (6,000 capacity).
Few should get more.
Not to mention no TV deal like the Power Five and their total enrollment as a school is so small that they arenât rolling in donor money. Frankly, keeping Mark Few long enough to build the program to this pseudo dynasty is Gonzagaâs biggest accomplishment.
Thanks very very much for this â I watched it last night (way too late) and it was awesome. Just an incredible story.
The Ivy League message board discussion on Mike Smith continues (the newer posts are down the page):

I cannot get over how inferior reading these people discuss things makes me feel
Whoâs getting wild with me and sprinkling USC moneyline tonight???
moneyline you say?
I do think that USC presents a very tough matchup for Gonzaga. They havenât seen a team like that this year and USC should shut down the interior. Timme is not going to have a fun night on either end. That said, not sure that USC will have enough fire power in the end, but Iâd love to see it
I liked this one:
So whoâs speaking ill of Smith; what could they possibly be saying; and how could it ever be worthy of even a nanosecond of thought for Mike Smith, Juwan Howard or any other purposeful human being?
You know youâre in rarified air when someone starts breaking out the semicolons.
I think thatâs iambic pentameter. Needs a couple of âforsoothsâ in there, though.
So much of what Gonzaga does revolves around elite dribble penetration and finishing at the rim. Theyâre still gonna be damn near unguardable but Iâm just convincing myself that all it takes is one night where they arenât shooting the lights out against that zone, and Mobley is the best player on the floor
