Which makes it easier for the Pistons to find value at finding undersized G who can score. Hayes and Cade are big enough to guard bigger players so it will work out well if they can a Lou Williams type on their team.
Nah, switch Cade and Hayes and thatās the likely depth chart. Theyāre not drafting Cade to be the SG, theyāre drafting him to be the PG
I watched like six hours of Cade videos late last night and put together this thread with some of my favorites:
I think he is the perfect fit. He will operate as the primary creator a ton but that can happen alongside Killian because Cade is so good off the ball. Saddiq Bey might end up getting 10 wide open threes a game next to those two with how good their vision is.
Thatās all semantics. You can play on ball a lot and not be the PG. He wonāt be guarding the PG so listing him elsewhere on the depth chart makes sense to me
Long thread on Franzās shooting at Alba and UM:
Where Iām at too. Maybe the PG doesnāt need to be a traditional PG but that player will have to do many PG things, including guarding other guards. Iām sure Cade is switchable but weāre not going to ask him to guard elite PGs night after night.
If youāre the primary ball handler, youāre essentially a PG. Luka, Harden, LBJ are PG in that case. Cade will be the primary ball handler and Hayes will be off the ball if both are on the same court. JMO. I would switch both Hayes and Cade in that classification. Hayes can play off the ball IMO. You donāt draft Cade and move him off the ball especially when heās better than Hayes
IMO, I donāt really think Hayes will be super effective playing off the ball right now. But heās also not effective playing on the ball. Just gotta hope he develops. He needs to become an effective shooter if ever wanted to be a starting caliber on-ball point guard anyway. Either he develops to be capable of being a secondary ball handler or he busts.
Donāt sleep on Hayesās playmaking ability. Having two players that can whip a one-handed pass to the opposite corner could make this a real fun offense to watch.
Add in some athletes sprinting in transition to receive length of the court bounce passes that curve around two defenders:
Hayes should not preclude Weaver from taking Cade. Hayes needs to develop or heāll be left behind. Cade is an elite talent and this is their rare shot of getting one. I think Hayes can develop into off the ball but at worst, heāll be a backup PG to Cade which he should be anyway IMO. I think Hayes can shoot. His FT% indicates that heāll develop into a shooting threat. His shooting numbers at Europe are all good as well.
Thatās a great pass, but Spikeās pass in the VCU game was still better.
Who cares who is called the PG? Kyrie Irving and Harden are both considered PGs. Thereās no rule that you can only have one PG in your lineup. Both Killian and Cade will play with the ball in their hands. Labels donāt matter. They will play together. Cade will likely guard wings, not PGs. Killian will guard PGs. Iām excited about their possibilities together. The shootersā eyes will be lighting up.
Killian can guard wings. Heās 6ā5" so theyāre both defender who can switch to most positions. Cade can guard 1-4 while Killian can guard 1-3. To me, Hayesā best role is backup PG who can run the 2nd unit but can play off the ball alongside Cade as a secondary ball handler.
I agree with his take on Franz. Heāll be a role player who will provide spot up shooting and can be a solid secondary creator but where heāll make his money is versatility on the defensive end. His instincts, length and ability to disrupt offense on/off the ball are great.
One thing for sure ā I donāt want a 6-8 guy relied on to be the leading scorer and also a two-way player also bringing up the ball for some 100 possessions a game. Thatās asking for trouble. Whatever you want to call Cade, heās 100% going to be an on-ball player who allows a team to thrive with incomplete players at the spot we call PG who offer the right kind of specialist skills.
Which is why I think Hayes best role is to be a secondary ball creator next to Cade and be the backup PG once Cade sits on the bench. I would try to stagger their minutes together as often as possible to ensure that the Pistons will have a ball handler at all times
Iām not in a position to comment. My interest in the Pistons and the NBA has bottomed out and I say maybe parts of may 10 games last year. Just stopped occuring to me to watch. I hope Hayes is a big part of the future but there are holes there and weāll see. My bias is that I really liked Halliburton.
Hayes and Cade will be one of the best passing backcourts in the league instantly. Hayes needs to be in the gym making 1,000 floaters a day but Iām not giving up on him. He had games where he was still really effective despite having no ability to score for himself just off his facilitating and defense alone. I think him and Cade is a match made in heaven.
Also thinking more long term, Killian + Cade + Bey + another knockdown shooter + center (maybe Stewart maybe someone better?) is a really fun formula
How is Hayes on defense? The concern with the lineup above would seem to be defense against super quick PGās, unless Hayes can check them.
The other nice thing about landing Cade is that it bumps Detroit up ever-so-slightly on the desired places for FAās to look at in the future. Maybe not elite NBA guys, but guys that wouldnāt have considered it 2 days ago.
