2020 Transfer Market

No respect for a coach who tells you what he thinks? I’d have less respect for a guy who lies just so he doesn’t piss off AAU coaches or recruits families.

I like Painter a lot, and love all of these quotes except for the first one…that strikes me as just a little petty. But I’m entertained

Mac McClung is in the portal.

This one may be a bit above UMs draw if he gets local option like this.

The social media echo chamber is an incredible thing. No idea where McClung will end up with the graphics to amplify tweeted rumors is pushing the envelope.

I like the fact that he tells us what he thinks, I’m all for that. Plus Painter is a generally interesting guy so I like hearing from him. Just not a fan of him publicly criticizing his former players for making moves they thought were in their best interest.

Is it absolutely absurd that Nojel Eastern continues to consider himself a pro without having proven much?? Of course. But I just think there’s no need for Painter (an adult) to be coming down so hard publicly on these guys. I guess I can see the other side of it, but it just doesn’t sit well with me is all.

Tennessee mod on 247 said he hadn’t heard anything about it and Tennessee is loaded up on guards and currently has no scholarships available.

How would a guy that just got in the portal and had no other kind of connection to the school suddenly have a favorite?

Sister played soccer at Tennessee, grew up an hour from there and grandparents are season football ticket holders

Question for the group:

What does it signal to you when a starter and leader from a power 5 program decides to transfer?

Is there a different perception when a fringe player or bench player transfers?

The contrast of the transfers between Michigan and Georgetown struck me.

Personally I try to look at every situation on an individual basis. There’s definitely transfers that carry with them personality or false sense of self concerns (hello Nojel), but every situation is so different, and honestly I don’t blame anyone for leaving the mess that was the Georgetown program last season.

A lot of the McClung schools floating around strike me more as “schools he would want” more than anything just based on the timing.

The twitter account behind the Tennessee rumors is the same account that had McClung transferring in April and had was Ant Wright’s source for Josh Christopher to ASU.

Depends on the situation.

For example, when there’s a coaching change with a new staff coming on board (not a promotion from within) a significant number of transfers usually follows…football usually 10+ and basketball usually 2-3+. Transfers in the aftermath of coaching changes doesn’t signal anything other than a player not being a fit for a coach who didn’t initially recruit him to the school.

Starters transferring for a lateral move – mid-major to mid-major / power conference to power conference / etc – can sometimes signal trouble in a lockerroom. But reserves transferring can often signal a search for more playing time.

Tough to draw broad conclusions without more specifics. But, yes, the transfers leaving Georgetown at this point is a little worrisome. Two guys leaving Purdue where there isn’t a pattern of leaving under Painter, is eh, and can be written off as a bad mixture in the locker room, but if there are more transfers next season then it becomes more eye opening.

I understand the Twitter account. Just commenting on the hype chamber. They also tweeted this.

Is he coming or going from my favorite team?

I get the point that you are making. I didnt want to see DDJ or Castleton go, but it made sense if they felt like they were being relegated and had more to offer. That doesnt scream dysfunction to me. Barring a coaching change, I think it is a red flag if a starter chooses to transfer laterally. The red flag is either with the program or the player. In the case of Purdue, I trust Painter enough that the red flags arent with the program but with the players. In the case of G-Town, I dont know which or both parties it signals a red flag to but it certainly signals it to me.

If you look at my ‘favorite team,’ Franz or Livers or Brooks transferring at this point would signal some weird stuff going on
