What are the chances Juwan (or anyone we’d have hired) is a bright of a basketball mind - and as capable of a teacher - as Beilein, Bennett, or Wright? Now, given those odds, are you willing to bet the future of the program on his abilities to overcome the recruiting disadvantages Michigan has recently put themselves at?
How can you conjure the second question if you don’t allow people the room to answer the first, or was the answer already made?
??
The second question is inherently coupled to the first, answer it how you will. If you think we can overcome the disadvantages of being squeaky clean, then I’d agree, continue being squeaky clean
Well I mean I’m not about to sign on the “Howard is a moron” line, no. Good god.
It’s not good enough to not be a moron. Mike Brey and Kevin Keatts aren’t morons and they’re getting their lunch eaten in the ACC because of talent disparity. Good God
We didn’t have a talent disparity! Nor does Villanova! Just admit you’re presenting a false choice and move on.
Nowhere did he say anything that could even remotely be implying that he thinks Howard is a moron.
And this is a false dichotomy.
Like most debates here, reality probably lies somewhere in the middle. Just look at the football side of things.
He is deciding that our new hire 44 year old coach is incapable of fielding nationally competitive teams without lowering admissions standards for basketball players.
Lol, flustered much? “I’m right, shut up”, classic.
We had a recruiting disparity that we overcame because of our coach. It is unlikely any coach we hired will be able to continue that. If you can’t see that, idk what to tell you
Saying
Is not at all saying that Juwan Howard is a moron. Do you actually think that Beilein’s ability to develop lower tier guys into NBA players is likely replicable? I just don’t see how one can disagree with that statement.
All about the odds, you don’t have the luxury of finding out after the fact
Are you familiar with hyperbole
No, teach me oh wise one.
Okay, well, if I need to answer, the chances are that Juwan is as bright of a basketball mind is unknown. The second question as to whether I’m willing to bet the future of the program on his abilities to overcome the recruiting disadvantages Michigan recently put themselves at is moot because I’m simply not that important nor do I have sway with prospective recruits. I was more concerned with discourse versus asking a single question and then angling the second question to imply the first question was already answered without refutation. If you’re asking a preference, I would prefer that Michigan run a clean program versus win-at-all-costs. It’s ambiguous, but do I believe that Juwan Howard will run a program Michigan can be proud of with respect to win-losses as well as rules compliance? Yes, I do.
As I put above, I don’t agree at all with the notion that we’re either northwestern or we’re Alabama football. I just don’t think a straw man needs to be used to refute that argument
You’ve gotta think the ties he has with seemingly everyone will allow him to recruit at a higher level than we’ve had without bagmen. People have been talking about how all the shout outs from Lebron, D Wade, Webber, etc. don’t really mean anything in terms of his coaching, but it tells me he has a unique ability to be able to connect extremely well with people who have “big” personalities.
I mean I could have said UNC basketball instead…
Does anyone care that Rashad McCants took fake classes? The Michigan brass would, I just want to turn on the TV after work on a Tuesday night and watch us best Ohio State at SOMETHING
Do we want to be UNC basketball though? Many people on the forums are seemingly okay with loosening our rules, but I don’t think alumni would be happy with something that devalues the entire institution like UNC’s academic stuff.
Edit: and just doing stuff like that doesn’t equate to more success. Michigan’s foray into that area was during a stretch of mediocrity far worse than what the past decade of cleanliness has provided.
Yeah I think the powers-that-be at Michigan are unwilling to take that risk.
I personally would because I think the most likely outcome is we end up repeating the past 20 years in football and allow basketball to slip back towards mediocrity, and there’s risk to that too
I have no qualms with that take. I was answering Oberon’s question as honestly and pragmatically as I could. I think recruiting will improve because I think Beilein’s rigidity cut himself off from quality students, as players and as people. However, Beilein’s “overkill” possibly assisted in the reason why he was voted “cleanest coach” in the business.
