2020 Recruiting Notes

I know we have. But this conversation was about Beilein’s offer philosophy. Beilein’s offer philosophy has nothing to do with why Beverly didn’t end up in Ann Arbor. Beilein didn’t offer him because he prioritized other players, not because Beverly didn’t visit or anything because we know that he did.

You could say the same thing about Maxey then as well. My point was if Beilein offered when on the visits like what usually happens if they themselves are the ones pushing the family for it, they usually get offers which is what I thought the recent topic was. Maxey and Beverly both had those occurrences at various points. In terms of talent both were/are top tier. Should’ve been targeted.

I believe Miller had 3 30+ point games this weekend.

They just aren’t a good example because they both visited and didn’t receive an offer for whatever reason (something other than Beilein’s no visit, no offer rule). Whether it was an uncertain evaluation or a perceived lack of mutual interest or anything. Just a different situation.

Our football team probably has much lower standards than Bielien had for our basketball team. What brand does Howard need to protect? The Beilien brand or the brand with the standards of our football program (I am not criticizing the football program at all…). Nobody wants a team of players who do not represent the university with class. That said, we don’t need to adhere to a threshold which is nearly impossible to sustain a high end program. Beilien was 1 in a million IMO. I want good kids in this program, I do want them going to class, etc. Outside of that, I would be aggressive as I could be to get the best talent. Winning shouldn’t be an optional (I am not assuming you meant that…I just am prioritizing the fact that we need to win at a high level))

The number of people champing at the bit to bury the most successful run in program history in an avalanche of complaints about minutiae is amazing.

Michigan is a school, not a pro sports franchise, and exists for reasons outside of basketball. Beilein did it the way it should be done.

My point tho was those guys under most college circumstances still receive offers because of their stature as players and overall talent. Most colleges didn’t stick so hard to their rules and overall fit to the roster roles. Especially Maxey whose family paid for him to go up to Michigan and MSU from Texas that weekend. At a place like Louisville, Florida, Xavier, etc players like that walk off campuses with offers 9/10 Times. Michigan being so picky may or may not have cost them from landing those players. If they truly wanted them or not isn’t my point for what I’m saying though. I’m just saying if they offered, it would’ve changed where they stood on the totem pole for those players.

Any reason people keep bringing up Miller other than being from Chicago and good?

I don’t think that’s accurate to say Harbaugh has much lower standards just because he offers kids before they visit. He still emphasizes building a relationship and the fact is that the kid is still expected to visit before committing. I think Harbaugh and Beilein are more alike than not in terms of the kids they try to bring into the program.
Harbaugh will offer earlier and uses the “offer” to initiate the process but the difference is really just semantics because the process still has to play out before they accept a commitment.

Who wants to bury/forget the Beilein era? Everyone has little things to nitpick. If anyone wants to forget the Beilein era idk what will appease them outside of going full fledged Pitino and buying players and buying them a good time

He was recruited by Michigan for a bit under Beilein’s staff. All early signs point to Howard and them picking it back up. He’s probably about the closest thing we know to players being recruited under Howard and whomever he brings in as assistants.

That way is likely non-replicable. Beilein’s abilities covered up for a lot. We can either be Stanford/Northwestern or we can be Alabama/Ohio State going forward. Either one is fine but we have to pick one and stick with it. If it’s the former, we can’t expect the fans to pony-up the way they currently do.

My point is just that Michigan probably didn’t offer for a reason.

My larger point is that offers just mean different things to different programs. Take Kansas who offers just about anyone. An offer is more of an invitation to come visit. If you have to wonder whether an offer is commitable it might not be an offer.

Michigan offered people that it 100% wanted in the program and thought wanted to be in the program.

Howard probably will be somewhere in the middle I would assume.

One of my biggest concerns about Howard and the new staff is its ability to scout prospects. Beilein seemed to have an amazing ability to spot talented players before they “hit” on the national scene. Even recruits Beilein ultimately lost out on, there seemed to be a pattern of ID’ing talent before the national brands.

Can Juwan and his staff properly identify which 5* prospects will actually be college difference makers and which 3*/4* prospects are under-valued?

Agree I also think we only get a small bump if any in recruiting of top players, making scouting about as important as it was before

Ah yes, Villanova and UVA are clearly “Alabama Football”.

Whoa, we got Bennett?? Or Wright??

We will be somewhere in between, closer to northwestern

You said Beilein was irreplaceable. You said there were two paths. Were Wright and Benett “Jay Wright and Tony Bennett” when they got hired?

I just named the winner of the past three national titles who are not Alabama, yet not Stanford.

I think we get a much bigger bump than you’re anticipating.
