2020 NCAA Tournament canceled

We know who the players are, we know who the coaches are, we will get a bracket still.

Some players will have other commitments, but let’s just still play the tournament with those teams some time in the future in basketball offseason.

Logistically there is just no way to make that happen. As much I wish there was a way it could happen, there is no way the 2020 NCAA tournament ever takes place. The sooner people come to terms with that the better.

I just hope they release a bracket for some closure.

Hey Dylan: Is the April signing period still on? Personally I just can’t see the NCAA granting basketball seniors another year of eligibility after they played a complete reg season. It would be complete chaos with the incoming freshman class and whatever else who knows at this time.

IMO its not going to happen.

I agree with you, bobohle. But if they did grant seniors another year of eligibility, it seems they would have to increase the number of scholarships a school could offer for the one year they “extended” those seniors scholarships. So, would a team like Michigan with two graduating seniors get two extra scholarships for a year, or three including Austin Davis? Would a team with four or five seniors get four or five extra one year scholarships. How about a team with no seniors. Seems, to me , like it would be a “can of worms” they just don’t want to open.

I think winter sports will be s o l. I could see them granting added eligibility to spring sports that never got going. My bet would be that the scholarship numbers stayed the same, but that scholar athletes for spring sports who maintained enrollment in the university would have a one year window where their scholarship wouldn’t count against the total for that team. That would eliminate transfers and be relatively simple to calculate.

Even if you gave teams extra scholarships, rosters would be bigger than is practical. If you have a 17-man roster for five spots on that floor, that would be weird.

They already have granted an extra year for spring sports.

With COVID-19 unlikely to disappear this calendar year, is anyone else looking ahead to March Madness 2022?

Yes, of course. You probably wouldn’t have any walkons, that’s for sure! EVERYONE would be on scholarship! Playing time nightmare! :slightly_smiling_face:

No, I absolutely don’t believe seniors who played close to 100% of their seasons ought to be granted another year of eligibility. I mean, Michigan, for instance has played 31 games plus an exhibition game and they “could” have ten more games, four in the B1G Tournament and six in the NCAA. Now, I hate to be a pessimist but the chances of them playing ten more games is pretty slim. But even if they won the B1G and the NCAA the 31 games would still represent 75% of their season. For most teams, they have already played 75% to 90/95% of their seasons. Heck, Northwestern and Nebraska have played 100% of their seasons, and I’ll bet they are far from alone. Granting eligibility to their seniors? Don’t think so.

No matter what happens next year, players/coaches/fans will always wonder what might’ve happened in the 2020 postseason.

I’ve thought about that. There probably won’t yet be a vaccine for next winter so this thing will probably be a menace then, too. Maybe we’ll have better treatments. But I could see this being an issue for another year.

Opening a can of worms was exactly what I was getting at on my previous post when I said chaos. I wish I had the writing skills some of you others have. Most of mine were bean counting if you know what I mean haha.

They have, but, they really haven’t played more that a few games of their season yet. A few games but, and correct me if I’m wrong, they haven’t even played half of their seasons, probably less than that, and they won’t be playing anytime soon. I can certainly understand offering another season to spring sport seniors, and frankly, to all participants of spring sports, not just seniors, but not those in winter sports. And you know what, they’ll still have problems with how to accommodate incoming freshmen. It’s just a tough time and there are tough decisions to make. I’m sure glad I don’t have to make them!

I understood exactly what you were saying bobohle, just wanted to add my two cents! Well, maybe my contribution was really only a penny’s worth!

Make the games 50 minutes long, with players not allowed to play more than 40 minutes in regulation. Simple.

The whole idea of granting an extra year is just misguided. People all over the world have or will be impacted by this pandemic. Are we really going to make this kind of effort to give back missed opportunities to everyone else?

OK, how about an all-covid-19 team? I’ll get it started:

Coach - Mikel Arteta
PF - Rudy Gobert (Jazz)
PF - Trey Thompkins (Real Madrid)
SG - Donovan Mitchell (Jazz)
Wing - Callum Hudson-Odoi (Chelsea)
PG - Fabio Wajngarten (Brazil, Press Minister)
PG - Donald Trump (alternate, results pending)

It seems to be easier to process with each passing day. When the news of canceling first came out I couldn’t imagine March with a new Madness such as we have now. Logistically they could push the season back and use conference tournaments as a conditioner for the NCAA tournament. I think the hype and momentum of the season is lost forever and it wouldn’t be the same. I now wonder if this will hurt basketball in the future.
