2020-21 Roster Speculation

Is Todd on the roster in this scenario too?

Yes. I think that will be our best 5. Play them.

Of course it is possible 3 out the 5 will not even be on our team…HaHa

I’d be stunned if Johns plays 30+ minutes if Todd is here. You can’t bring in a five star and barely play him if you want future five stars to commit to you. He and Johns will likely play approximately the same amount of minutes. Also, by playing Johns 30+ minutes that means Juwan plays less than 10 minutes per game with a true five (to be divided among two fives no less). Not going to happen.

My guess is Zeb will get the 6th most minutes. Todd the 7th. I just don’t think it is going to be easy for Todd to be better than Johns or Livers. Not a knock on Todd. Johns and Livers are just that good.

The model for success is not to attract 1 and dones. The model for success is to attract 1 and done talent and have them stay two or 3 years.

Seems like there’s a lot more Brandon Johns love in general from the fan base here than I expected. I like him, but I definitely don’t expect him to be that much better than the highest rated recruit Michigan has signed in 20+ years. Johns’ performance last year with tons of minutes when Livers got hurt just didn’t impress me that much. Unless his shooting numbers take a big jump from three, I’m not seeing the breakout that a lot of others seem to believe is coming.

I could definitely be wrong. I thought there were times last year where Johns looked like he was on the cusp of being one of our best players.

I see Todd as a one of the top 10 recruits we have had in last 10 years. I see Josh Christopher as the best potential recruit we have had since Webber.

Not sure about the specifics but if Livers and Wagner stay and if we get Christopher and Todd then this team is going to be awesome. I will be enjoying the ride!!

OK, according to this scenario there are 80 minutes left for five players in a 9 man rotation, but 40 of those minutes are going to someone playing the five. So, my guess is that two of the players playing at the five spot will get more than 16 minutes each, and that would mean the three remaining players would get less than 16 minutes.

I would also say if Isaiah L, Franz, and Josh are all on the team they would, barring major foul trouble, get 32 minutes, maybe more, so…Now, I could also see Eli getting 28 minutes, so minures for those other players are going to be a tough commodity.

So:
Isaiah Livers 32
Franz Wagner 32
Josh Christopher 32
Eli Brooks 28
Isaiah Todd 20
Mike Smith 15
Hunter Dickinson 15
Brandon Johns 15
Austin Davis 8
Mop up time 3

Oops, this won’t work, either, because we might need more than three minutes of mop up time. WOW! This is going to be hard! :wink:

When factoring-in mop up time throws off all of your predictions—you know the team is going to be good. It will be a very fun team to watch!

I really like Brandon Johns but I do think people may be getting ahead of themselves a bit. He’s flashed some really good play but was still very inconsistent. He could absolutely put it all together but I don’t think that can be assumed. Certainly not enough to assume he’ll be far superior to Todd

Assuming Livers stays and Christopher commits.

Brooks = 30
Christopher = 25
Livers = 30
Wagner = 30
Davis = 15
Johns = 20
Todd = 15
Smith = 15
Dickinson = 10
Bajema = 5

I’ll be incredibly surprised if Todd plays fewer than twenty minutes a game. Especially as this team shapes up not to have a true starting center with Davis as a back-up and Dickinson talented but still likely young and learning.

I’ll take a crack at it with the assumptions that Todd, Christopher, and Livers all on board:

1- Brooks (25), Smith (15)
2- Christopher (30), Brooks (5), Bajema (5)
3- Wagner (30), Livers (10)
4- Livers (20), Todd (15), Johns (5)
5- Johns (20), Davis (10), Dickinson (10)

By player that’s:
Brooks- 30
Christopher- 30
Livers- 30
Wagner- 30
Johns- 25
Todd- 15
Smith- 15
Davis- 10
Dickinson- 10
Bajema- 5

I just think that ifffff Livers comes back and Christopher commits we are going to see a lot of different line ups depending on the situation. I see where Coach Howard may use a group almost like a full second unit as some other coaches have done in the past when they were this deep with talent.

Agree. Too much talent and depth. Almost feels like you may see Juwan ride the hot hand, most games. I don’t see Johns playing 30 minutes, unless Livers is gone. Feel like Dickinson and Davis collectively take 25 of the 40 at the center spot. The 4 is a logjam and no chance Todd plays less than 20 minutes. Good problem to have though.

I am trying to avoid this discussion before the roster is finally settled, but Zeb Jackson is going to play some PG so that we have someone with experience in the 21-22 season.

Yeah, I think my breakdown not including Zeb or Williams is probably inaccurate it’s just really hard to predict how things will shake out. I think you make a really good point about Zeb though, if he doesn’t get minutes we’d be heading into 21-22 with no guards with any playing experience (except maybe Bajema).

I’m really high on Brandon Johns too, but we have to remember his “breakout” consisted of 5-6 high level games in a row. Outside of Oregon we didn’t get much out of him before that stretch and he didn’t replicate it later in the year either.

Where he shot the lights out from 3-point range – something he hasn’t really shown consistently.

There are still a lot of questions about which fours are on the roster next year but if they all are, I don’t really understand the math to get Johns close to 30 minutes per night.

Much better stated there. If he shoots like he did over that stretch then probably can’t take him off the court. But he also has a longer history of not playing at that level. Obviously if that is the norm for him, it will be hard to keep him off the court, but I’m not sure we can expect that given the small sample size of him playing at that level.
