2019 Transfer Market

Pure guess, but I would think at least one of Wilson, Wagner, or Cumberland are on Michigan’s roster next season. Getting 2 of the 3 is a little more optimistic than I’m willing to go right now.

I’d take one of those three at this point and be exstatic if we got two.

This is obviously wildly speculative, but I’m still holding out real hope on Wagner and Wilson. With them, I think a certain kind of early success for Juwan might be more likely. . . fans could stop holding their breath. I’ve been impatient with everyone’s impatience, but–maybe like others–have been looking for that point of demarcation where I could say, “Alright, things are in hand! Let’s let them all have their summer and see how things look in the fall!” Put away the magnifying glass and just feel good about how it has all shaken out.

In my opinion, a realistic “best case scenario” for this summer would be:

  • 1 new member of the Freshman Class (Wilson, Wagner, or a 2020 reclassification?)
  • 1 immediate eligibility transfer (Cumberland or I don’t really know, honestly)
  • 1 “traditional” transfer (a sit 1, play 1or2 type from this second wave of late portal entries)

Would improve roster options next season and give a little more roster certainty to the 20-21 squad…which would still be a big recruiting class to fill Simpson, Teske, a Grad Transfer, likely Davis, and more likely than not another departure (either NBA early entrant or Transfer out of the program)

If I had to give odds on Wilson and Wagner, I’d go:

Wilson - 40% to be in the class
Wagner - 5%

Helps to have Mo in our corner but hard to expect Franz to leave a reasonable situation for a big unknown.

Summer classes begin July 3, so that would be a next “deadline day” from a Michigan perspective, I would think. Get incoming recruits/transfers in classes for the Summer half term.

Late morning update: Cincy just signed another grad transfer PG (in addition to the frosh from yesterday) which brings even more doubt about room for Jaevin considering Cincy still returns their top 3 wings from last season.

not sure if anyone mentioned Grimes. Seems like a solid sit 1 play 3

I think the thought is that he might be a sit one, play one given his NBA stock.

That’s 100% his plan. He’s pretty young for his grade. He just turned 19 this month. He will be 20. My biggest worry is how serious is he about playing. I felt like he was half-assing his way through the season expecting to be a lotto pick. Didn’t seem super coachable either. Maybe it was just when I watched

Maybe the draft feedback could serve as a wake up call

Sitting a year should have an effect on his coachability, wouldn’t you think?

Maybe. Maybe not. If his circle has their own agenda and keep telling him he’s the greatest gift on the planet and stuff should be handed to him and people should bend over backwards to please him, no. But you’d hope it’d have a Charles Matthews-type impact on him sitting out. A humbling experience.

I’m sure Michigan won’t land this kid.

Are you suggesting that a bag of money might fall off a truck while the kid is crossing the street in Clemson, SC?

Has anyone actually seen any reports of him being courted by Michigan? I think we all hoped that we would be involved but I haven’t actually seen anything

That’s what I was implying. That things appear to be moving quick for him and Michigan hasn’t shown any interest to the public’s knowledge.

Next week’s news:
OU transfer Cumberland to spend graduate year in Ann Arbor.
Howard brings former Wolverine commit Wilson back into the fold.
Michigan’s recruiting adds Moe-mentum as 2019 prospect Franz Wagner commits to UM.
Martelli, Washington, Eisley round out new coach Juwan Howard’s staff.

Only one of those is likely, but I’m feeling greedy.
