2019 Transfer Market

I wouldn’t be surprised if Belein is kicking the tires on Moss currently. He seems like he’d be more of sure thing in the B1G as a grad transfer than Cumberland, he’s bigger and already has been a multi year starter in the B1G

if thats the case it probably means they don’t feel good about their chances landing cumberland. Still think people are sleeping on Cumberland

As a freshman he played behind the nation’s leading scorer Kay Felder

Junior year behind Kendrick Nunn, the Horizon League player of the year.

Last year when given a real shot, he was second leading scorer at 17ppg and 40% from three

Players from Oakland and their MPG over their career really shouldn’t be fretted over. Kampe ALWAYS runs a short line-up because he trusts different guys to play huge minutes every year, sometimes at the expense of the rest of the team. This past year that was Cumberland getting the minutes. Previously it’s been Nunn, Hayes, and Walker, or Felder, or Corey Petros, or Travis Bader.

It doesn’t have to have anything to do Cumberland. Belein could see a guy in Moss who’s bigger, an excellent three point shooter (was 42% last year) and has already been an effective multi year starter in the B1G. Moss is closer to a sure thing playing in the B1G.

Not me. I’d be very happy getting Cumberland as I think he is a great fit for what we need. There is always some risk when a kid transfers that it won’t be a good fit at the new school, regardless of their previous conference level. To me the risks with Cumberland shouldn’t be too great given his familiarity with the area, Saddi, etc.

not as efficient as a player, shooting below 40 percent from two and in the 70s from the free throw line, also worst Assists to turnover ratio

Moss was actually playing starters minutes multiple years in B1G against major competition, not 30 games a year against UW-Milwaukee or UofD level teams. He’s is a multi year starter in the B1G and has produced every year. Cumberland’s had 1 good year in the Horizon league where he played more than 10 minutes a game. Moss is more of a sure thing it’s not really debatable. (Just to correct you hes an 82% free throw shooter as well)

No doubt Moss is a quality player with a more proven track record, but we don’t know if there are other on court or off court factors that make him less of a fit. I have to believe JB and his staff did some due diligence with Moss and to this point it hasn’t gone anywhere.

I agree, fit has to be right. Moss just became available within the last week the due diligence is likely still in progress. I think Moss would step right in to a starting role here.

Career yes 82, has two years in the 70s, including last year. and cumberland had 13 and 14 vs MSU and Georgia respectively. and yes only started after playing behind two very solid players.

cumberland has interest from virginia, oregon and most importantly from JB. so the more of sure thing is far from a sure thing. JB has seen Moss what 6-7 times in three years, seems like he’d pump the breaks if we had a shot or thought he was a better fit

using conference as a decider seems limited, tell that to matt mooney or traiq owens about prior competition meaning they cant compete on big stage

Cumberland has 2 years at 70% FT, and one in the 50% range so not sure what point about free throw shooting you were trying to make (Moss was 79% last year). And Moss has dozens of 10+ point games against B1G competition in his career (15 just last year). We’ll see what happens, Moss’s recruitment is just getting started. Its easier to project guys that have actually had success at a high major level as a starter for multiple years, for every Matt Mooney or Tarik Owens (both had more experience/track record than Cumberland) you have exponentially more Jaron Simmons types.

lol, agree to disagree. careful using an 8 game sample size.

trust coach, whatever he does

Lol I trust Belein so what ever he does is fine with me. Moss fits the need better is all. Their shooting numbers are nearly identical, but One has started 96 games in the B1G, compared to 33 games in the horizon, pretty glaring difference.

Tariq Owens transferred from St. Johns…

Is there any reported interest between Moss and Michigan? I get that he looks good from our end but is there any inkling of inclination from his end that he’d be interested in Michigan? The tweet above lists several schools, none of which are Michigan.

ya st johns is not a big ten level program, definitely above horizon tho. point was you dont need to play in power 5 to be good

It’s been less than a week since he decided to grad transfer. We didn’t hear a thing about Cumberland interest for a month. It’s still really early for him.

If St Johns isn’t a B1G level program then there are B1G programs that are not B1G level. Big East is in the basketball power 5 and if St. Johns had Tariq Owens they would have been a top 25 team this year.

No one is arguing that Cumberland wouldn’t be a good add, from what I can tell. @MoeSWagner is just arguing that Moss is better, and I agree. Mooney’s 2pt FG% dropped almost 7% in his move up. And he took more shots at SD than Cumberland did at Oakland. If Cumberland played in the B1G his 2pt% would be on Moss’ level if I had to guess. It’s extremely likely if Cumberland comes to Michigan he does nothing other than shoot 3s. Basically freshman Irvin or Poole, but with a senior level understanding of the college game. Which is good! and something we could use. Moss has more defensive potential and is a proven shooter.
