so two player’s senior years are more important than the other 9-10 and the future rosters? not sure i buy that
that said im rooting for Pierce/Wagner as i think that does maximize next years team lol

Sam might say that, Sam’s sources might say that, but since Beilein has never seen Hyland play live (and Beilein is Michigan in terms of who Michigan likes more), and since a visit has been set up with Quinones (at which time he’s very likely to be extended an offer, which he could take before Hyland even visits) but not with Hyland, this seems like a real stretch to me. I’m not opining as to who is, or will turn out to be better–I’m just saying that Sam has been on the Hyland train for a while, also saying things like he’s well above Pierce on Michigan’s wish list, which I’m quite confident is not accurate at this time.
Sam did say his information is from an informed source, just not his opinion.
It’s way too early to say that.
Two years ago, we lost Wilson, Walton and Irvin, and opened the year unranked. Fast forward to April, we’re playing Nova for the title.
This year, we started the year ranked, but no one saw a 17-0 start coming. And certainly we were capable of reaching the Final Four, though we ultimately fell short.
I’ll wait and see who’s on the roster before saying we can’t be a contender. The only teams I see right now that would be clearly ahead of us would be Duke, UK, and MSU.
Of course he did. So what? The facts–Beilein hasn’t seen Hyland play live, and Quinones is going to get a committable offer before Hyland even sets up a visit–say that this is speculation and not anything more. Maybe one of the assistanta-has Hyland higher on the board than Quinones, or is factoring in the much greater likelihood that we will get Hyland over Quinones and spinning it into a desire, or maybe is projecting that when Beilein sees him this weekend, he’ll vault him to the top of the board. To say it definitively though doesn’t follow.
I disagree (respectfully of course). I wouldn’t rule out this team until we see who is in and out. If you told me that Livers improves his game and Johns takes a big step, I would like this team a lot. I also believe Castleton is going to be a beast…my personal opinion is that he might be the best 5 we have had here under Beilien and that says a lot. Right now the favorite to win the NC is MSU. Are you suggesting this team can’t be as good as MSU? I don’t buy it. I think it will be senior led, have less team distractions and have talent. While saying any team is a NC team might be a 15 to 1 proposition give or take…I am absolutely looking at taking a drive down to Atlanta next spring to participate in the Final 4 with Michigan being 1 of the teams. Last time it was in Atlanta was a lot of fun for Michigan and we didn’t officially lose in the final 4 or NC game.
Yes it does.
LQ has always been s fallback option. Always.
You can discover someone out of the blue, do some research gauge the interest and immediately like them as a better fit for the program without seeing them live. Happens all the time.
if we got pierce and wagner, i could see a final four ceiling… if its LQ or Hyland with Pierce, no I don’t see the potential for next year and would defer to Hyland because longer term better prospect
So we’re going to offer the “fallback option” before we even schedule a visit with the guy we really want? Or are we going to bring him up and not offer? Of course you can discover someone late and think they’re a better fit than someone you’re already recruiting–you’re right, it does happen a lot–but when that occurs, you get the new top of the class guy to your campus before the “fallback option” so that Plan B doesn’t take the spot. Moreover, when that occurs, it is almost invariably after Beilein himself has had a chance to watch the new guy play live–the only guys I can think of who did not fall into that category were MAAR and Duncan Robinson, both of whom had a strong recommendation from someone Beilein knew, and neither of whom was actually competing with a long time recruit for a single roster spot.
I agree, beilein definitely values in person evals but there’s so much video out there today that I am sure beilein has seen enough video to allow him to evaluate Hyland and quinones and have a pretty good idea who he likes more.
Just a little workout video
Coach will see him this weekend live and Lester visits on Monday. He should have a pretty good idea which way he wants to go.
And he may well see Hyland, love him, and place him way above Quinones–that’s certainly possible. To now say definitively though that Hyland is Plan A and Quinones is Plan B seems a major stretch.
I mean you’re basically saying Sam Webb is flat out wrong, which has happened like once in the last decade.
Thanks for the heads up about Atlanta! I am in Tallahassee and think that I am going to get tickets.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Quinones visit. Will he get a firm offer, one that he could accept on the spot? I expect there will be a discussion about his decision timeframe. I’m skeptical that he will be able to take an offer ahead of Pierce.
You don’t build culture with video.
Beilein never saw Caris play live afaik. Offered him based on tape and Trey Burke’s dad’s rec.
Sam has good sources to be sure, but like everyone else in the business, he gets things wrong. As recently as last week, he said that Pierce was down the pecking order, which is not the case, then said on Monday that Notre Dame was the buzz for Pierce (that hasn’t been the case for over a week), and then updated to say that he had a very positive report on Pierce. I’m NOT trying to dump on Sam–as I said, he has very good sources, and imparts a lot of information–but recruiting is fluid, and multiple sources can give very different takes. In this case, I’m looking at facts, not whose source says what, or which recruiting guru or source you choose to follow, and the facts are that Quinones could take Hyland’s spot before a visit is set up, and Beilein has seen Quinones play live a fair amount, while never having seen Hyland at all. Those facts do not equate to Quinones being a fallback, at least not before (a) Beilein sees Hyland this weekend and falls in love with him live, or (b) Beilein gets a negative vibe from Quinones on his visit and doesn’t push to get him.
You guys act like recruiting isn’t fluid. Things change daily with recruits and coaches interest alike.
