2019 - G - Nah'Shon Hyland (VCU Commit)

Agreed on the last sentence. I know little about the intricacies of college defense so I’m mostly just playing devil’s advocate here.

You didn’t think he looked athletic in high school ?

I was referring to what I saw as soon as he got here. Looked uncoordinated. Slow. Mechanical

I agree with most of this. But, your analysis of the five man’s role on offense really depends on the player. Mo Wagner, for example, often made plays with the ball. And if Johns stayed at the five, I think his game is much closer to Mo’s than Teske’s.

I really think Johns will play the four next year. Castleton will be the back-up five, and if anything, he’ll only command more minutes.

Meanwhile, unless Wilson plays the four - and I don’t think he’s got the size for that - Livers will need a backup, and it will probably be Johns.

If we land Pierce, I’d imagine he would start at the three, with Wilson backing him up. Same with Franz Wagner - he would probably battle Wilson for time at the three.

Got you this makes more sense.

Yes, as noted, we have plenty of bodies at the 5, and none of them are suitable as a 4 in a Beilein offense, so there is no reason and no room to play Johns at the 5, even if he could be just as good at either. If Brazdeikis leaves, I could even see Livers sliding down to the 3, if Johns came along at the 4.

SG will be the problem next year. We had one real 2 on the roster, he played 35 minutes a game, and he’s gone. We’re either going to have to play someone who is not really suited for the position for a lot of minutes, or hope that someone like Nunez or Bajema develops more than expected.

At the 2 position for us this upcoming 2019/20 season, how do we compare Bajema’s size and talent vs that of Hyland and that if Quinones?

Hyland is the smallest at 6’3” and 165 lbs.

Bajema is 6’7” and 175 lbs.

Quinones is 6’5” and 180 lbs.

I have read on these forums that Bajema has great potential but there is some concern that he needs a year to add weight and strength and get experience playing better competition.

Do we not have the same concerns about Hyland playing the 2 position for us next year?

How does Quinones look vs Bajema and Hyland?

Based on his appearance I’d be stunned if Quinones wasn’t closer to 195-200 pounds. He looks very thick in the upper body. Harlond Beverly looks skinny/wiry and he’s 182 he said as of today. He got weighed by the Montverde staff. Quinones is older and he just looks like he can absorb contact easier.

I agree. Q looks like a guy who could handle the bump and grind of a long conference season.

Strong take from MattD.

I’m listening to his radio show and Sam Webb just gave his opinion that Michigan likes Hyland much better than Quinones. This was not his personal opinion of who is the better prospect.

i feel the same way about hyland and dont get why people say to bank the scholarship. Hyland a year into system > 95% of 2020 recruits

kid has handle, scores at 3 levels and shares the rock

We need guys that can win 1 on 1 battles at both ends of the court. If coach thinks he can do that then sign him.

I wanted to post this last week, but I was hesitant given I had only seen highlight film of both, which often doesn’t tell the full story. I think Hyland has a chance to me a much better player than Quinones and I think Hyland is the better prospect. Quinones may be a better fit for the roster next year because he is a shooter first and foremost (of utmost importance around X ball screens) and his body is more physically developed and “ready” for Big Ten play. But Hyland’s handle, ability to create for himself, and shooting off the dribble is much more difficult to find.

re LQ… not saying you saying this… but i’ve seen whats best for next year argument out there… pardon my pessimism, this team isn’t a national title team next year. so i lean towards whats the better 2-3 year option than maximizing between a round of 32 vs elite 8 team ceiling next year

I agree that the team won’t be a national title contender, but how many seasons is that really possible? Especially given how much attrition to NBA, transfer, etc. happens in today’s college game. I think you have to try to put the best possible roster around a senior Simpson and Teske.
