2017 Recruiting Notes

Rankings are a tool, but not THE tool…have to look at film, live evaluation, adjust for comp level in order to get a true feel for a prospect. Lots of kids underrated, lots of kids overrated. In retrospect, Donte Grantham was MUCH better than DJ Wilson despite similar rankings, just to cite an example.

I won’t even look at the rankings. All film
And live looks. Only way to go

Rankings are not a tool for independent assessment, at least not IMO. However, for me, it serves as sort of barometer to see if others are in the same ballpark as I am, if that makes sense.

Do you scout for someone? Just curious

No comment right now, but I’d say I have a reasonably informed opinion.

Oh alright. Cool stuff

I scout central Illinois and Jordan Goodwin would be an ideal guy for beilein to go after late in the game and scoop him up like he did Xavier. Ja’sean Tate is the best comparison and we could definitely be a guy who would contribute right away.

Hope that didn’t come off the wrong way. If so, my apologies

Alum - did a bit more digging on this for you. Hardy measured in at 6’0 without shoes and 186lbs at the 2015 Nike 100 last summer. Also had a wingspan of 6’4. Basically he’s a bit bigger than Trey, albeit the measurements are a bit dated in the context of a HS player, so he may have grown. That’s pretty good size for a college PG. Functionally Hardy is 6’2, and probably around 190 at this point, which is really good size for a college PG. Has a college ready frame already

Thanks. He’s an intriguing prospect. I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing us add an athletic combo guard depending on how the scholarship situation plays out.

I’m on record as saying I don’t think we should take a backup PG in 17, we have more pressing needs from both a positional and talent standpoint. BUT, if we must have a backup PG, give me Hardy over West every day of the week.

I pretty much agree. I definitely don’t want a pure pg. I’d be fine with a combo guard if he upgraded our athleticism. But you are correct that we have more pressing needs.

I’ve said this before but everytime I see West mentioned I can’t help but think Jerrett Smith. Please no.

Oh boy that’s not good Blair!

Talked to an AAU coach recently who was pretty high on Cain. Unfortunately, Beilein doesn’t recruit Detroit players and no one respects him there. :smirk:

I’m glad they are paying attention. I still would like Cain to go against better competition in AAU before offering. Luckily that starts in May so not too much longer.

Doesn’t play for the Big 3 (Family, Mustangs, 1Nation), so he won’t get as much exposure relatively speaking. But, he does face off against some of the same competition that the Big 3 will face. Cain’s/Detroit Stars first tournament is April 8

Is the thought with Cain that his ranking is gonna skyrocket over AAU season this summer? Rivals is just ahead of the curve because they’ve actually watched him?

Depends on who sees him and what type of tournament/comp…I most definitely think he’s a top 100 player, and a Plan A type kid.
