Simpson and Lucas should be next man up… Problem is, Simpson supposedly decides tomm
Lucas is the guy that Michigan watched consistently throughout July.
Seems like JB’s biggest asset (his ability to turn underrated players into stars), is becoming is biggest detriment. He’s essentially been typecast into this role and now he cant get a different role. Every major recruit says the same thing, “I love how he turns under the radar players into NBA talent”, but in the end, they go elsewhere. Becoming known around the CBB world as “that coach” is starting to work against his ability to recruit anything different than low to mid level players.
Blue blood, your explanation is as good as any. I mean it is totally illogical but who knows what is going on in these recruits heads. Take Jaylen Brown. Top ten player likely to be drafted top ten. What is stopping him from being drafted 1-3? Obviously his shot! Isn’t JB known for being one of the best shooting coaches?
It sounds ridiculous, but it must be at least a little bit true. Sure, Beilein’s personality could have something to do with it, and maybe kids just don’t get as excited about playing for him, but if that’s true, then how can you explain Ohio State’s and Maryland’s sudden recruiting success? Are kids really that excited to play for Mark Turgeon?? Is Thad Matta really that inspiring??
i was being sincere. I can’t figure out what these recruits are thinking. Your explanation could be part of it. I also wonder if Beilein has higher expectations regarding studying. Maybe it scares kids away? I don’t know…For example, is it really that hard to see that Michigan is superior to Michigan state at developing talent? It seems so obvious!!!
Maybe there is some negative recruiting going on. When Michigan wasn’t a huge threat, Beilein was landing solid verbals from the players he wanted. Now that Beilein/Michigan has proved to be a threat, the cars-salesman coaches are putting some negative recruiting (about Michigan) in their pitches.
I’ve made every excuse possible in the past for recruiting. But it just evident that coach Beilein does just not resonate with the blue chip kids.
It’s a shame that he really does have kids best interests at heart and shoots them straight about the work he expects them to put in (on the court and in the classroom) but that it impacts him negatively. He is old school and that is not going to change so this is the state of our program over the coming years. The kids he identified before they blew up and locked down are harder to get because when we identify them others now swoop in. It’s like interest from us indicates a kids worth as they begin to climb the rankings.
The Battle situation was a perfect example of a kids selfishness but Beilein does not act selfish in anyway when recruiting these kids. We will continue to get solid kids but not program changing kids. Two years ago I thanked our lucky stars that it appeared we would have Beilein for years to come however now part of me is starting to look towards a change in our philosophy and recruiting ability when the time comes for a coaching change. Though if Bacari or Lavell succeed Beilein than I don’t know how much of a change we will see.
I expect we will see Bridges fall by the wayside in the coming weeks. I don’t know what can be done but I continue to hope for the best as I bleed Blue to the day I die.
Been saying it for a while, but getting really elite recruits is going to be a rare occurrence for us. Maybe once every 5 years or so. Beilein is just not a salesman, and nothing he does on the court is going to improve our recruiting profile…that much is clear. We’re just going to have to live with a poor batting average on 5 stars and hope Beilein can make the most of who he does get.

2016 PG Cassius Winston has cut his list of schools to Michigan State, Pittsburgh & Stanford.
Winston and U-M are officially done. http://www.umhoops.com/2015/09/09/michigan-out-of-the-race-for-four-star-guard-cassius-winston/
Amazing how our program was about to turn the corner on MSU (ie, had we gotten Langford). Now we’ve been relegated back to the second tier while Izzo stands poised to assemble another power house class in '16.
I’d say its pretty crucial that this '15/'16 team put together a solid season and tournament run in order to help keep this program relevant. Need some sort of momentum in order to spark a higher level of interest among '17 recruits.
This upcoming season may be the most important Season of JB’s entire coaching career.
I also think it’s time to start looking at a new assistant coach or two. They are not getting the job done.
I don’t know. If playing in the national title game followed up by winning the Big Ten and making the elite eight didn’t provide a big bump in recruiting, I am not sure what this year’s team could do to elevate recruiting. We were in on a lot of high profile kids the last few years but we didn’t land the vast majority of them.
It seems any time the recruitments are extended time wise, we end up on the outside looking in. These long drawn out recruiting battles never seem to go our way. The longer it goes, the worse our chances for whatever reason. I think at this point, we have to conclude recruiting is what it is under Beilein. He will get good players and coach them up but landing the super high profile recruits is going to be a major challenge.
I also think it’s time to start looking at a new assistant coach or two. They are not getting the job done.
I think that is a ridiculous statement. Has recruiting been far less than ideal, yes. But, how have the results on the court been? You know, the stuff that actually matters…

Not that great as of late. We will revisit the replacing an assistant coach talk later this year.
You cannot continue to recruit like we are recruiting and expect the program to continue to trend up. We are headed in the wrong direction. JB isn’t a miracle worker, he still needs talent to win at a high level.

Not calling you out mpbear14, but I think this statement is the problem we’re having as a program. We only had one bad year. ONE. Two years ago we were a Harrison 3 away from a potential Final 4 berth, and three years ago we were in the NC game.
I think we’re doing enough to make these players’ lists for consideration, and then short-term memory kicks in. I realize we weren’t landing players this time last year either, but I just think we’re in the unfortunate position of needing to establish ourselves as a consistent top team for several years without any blips before we’ll start landing the top tier guys. And the timing just couldn’t be worse when Izzo makes another miraculous FF run, Maryland has all the pre-season hype, and the blue bloods will always be a challenge regardless.
well those couple years of being a top tier program were fun while they lasted but I’m afraid it is back to being a middling Big Ten program with an occasional sweet sixteen run. You can’t get to the promise land without some elite talent and it is clear those players just don’t want to play for this program.
And let’s be honest about things. This is not because we had one injury filled down year. Our recruiting problems are far more systemic.
Almost bizarre beyond belief. Jizzo comes in and nabs our two most needed recruits at our two most needed positions of future need. What a gut shot. No matter where the blame falls our recruiting is like an keystone kops episode now. Chaotic and unorganized. We can not continue to strike out with such consistency ( insert obligatory apologists defense of JB now ) and expect to be an upper echelon program for long. I know it’s not fashionable to question JBs shortcomings, but damn if you can’t recruit at Michigan after making a FF and having the National POY, that’s incredibly disappointing.
