2016 Point Guard Recruiting (Xavier Simpson)

Webb never said that. In fact he said, right before Donovan left he said that it's a Michigan/Florida battle. Langford's father said the Battle pledge helps Michigan. We are right there for JL. Maybe even more so now. When Davis preps and is moved to '17, and inevidebly go through some type of attrition, we will have the room.... IF JL wants Michigan..

Yes, actually, Webb did say that.

When I spoke to Cassius at EYBL he was pretty adamant that he wasn't very close to making a decision. Was focused on basketball more than recruiting and wanted to take officials before making his choice.

Things can always change, but would be a big shift.

Well the upside is that he can’t focus on basketball right now, heh.

Would be great to get Langford, even in lieu of a true point. Not about to advocate Creaning anybody, but I’d totally forgive them if they did (just this one time).

I think Sam saying Michigan “shouldn’t waste their time” with Langford is an oversimplification of his take on what their recruiting approach should be and using Langford as an example.

That said, Webb just said that he expects the staff to definitely continue recruiting Langford throughout the cycle.

There’s no reason to stop recruiting Langford and I would be shocked if they did.

I still think a PG is a priority.

If its an either/or situation, how do you think it plays out assuming Langford wants to commit first?

If Langford calls up Beilein and says he wants to commit, I don’t think you can tell him no (and I don’t think Michigan would).

Langford could definitely play the point. He’d need to tighten up his handle a bit, but he’s definitely a good enough passer. I loved his passing from his H.S. video. Teammates weren’t great but he was good about keeping them involved.

If Davis does indeed go the prep route, that would leave the open spot for a PG (hopefully Winston) and then we would be at 13 once again. I don’t see why you would pump the brakes on Langford at all when the oversign slot would still be available. Frankly if I were JB, I would recruit for 14 spots every single recruiting year because of how frequently we have had attrition over the past 5 years or so.

Also, weren’t we overcommitted by like 2 or 3 players in 2012 when Brundidge, Smotrycz, and Christian were still on the team (and even more in 2013 when we added Irvin and Walton early to the fold)? I don’t see the problem with going all in on both Winston and Langford even though we currently don’t have the space.

A worthwhile read on scholarship counts here http://forum.umhoops.com/discussion/comment/20248/#Comment_20248

I agree with everyone here that a true PG is not a must for 2016 if Longford wants to commit. Beilein ran two guard system for many years before he had Morris and Burke, and if additional scholarship opens up in last minute, Beilein is very good in finding another Spike or MAAR.

Worse case (in a good way) scenario. You still likely have Walton and MAAR. Add in Battle, Chatman, and Langford to support them. We’re good :o)

IF Cassius does join the class and IF/WHEN MAAR is out there with him at the 2, can we call it the Butterfly and Bee backcourt? Or maybe one of the two at least?

That would be “The Greatest” backcourt for sure.

Lol, I’m an idiot. I didn’t realize Cassius was pronounced like Cash-us. I’ve been thinking his name was pronounced like Cass-e-us this entire time.

Anyone worried that going away from a true point might damage the point guard “U” perception? Unless of course JB turns a non point guard into a true point guard just to showcase how brilliant his PG magic is.

Nah, I think having a championship-caliber team will attract great players at all positions (except maybe the five). No need to be “Point Guard U”. It’s OK to be be “Combo Guard U”. Or just “Guard U”. Or “Positions One through Four U.”

In 13-14, the two primary ball handlers were not PGs

Any updates, tweets indications on Winston’s visit?

Don’t expect a commitment today. Winstons have been pretty clear that they are in no hurry. The more face time that the coaches get with Cassius, the better. Maybe there was open gym, as well.
