2016 Point Guard Recruiting (Xavier Simpson)

Winston arrived on campus this evening/late afternoon… So I would assume visit is still going on.

Yeah I wasn’t expecting a commitment but hopefully we’ll see some pic tweets like we did with Battle.

Do we go with Levert hosting him and bowling again lol!

New film on Winston from GR Storm Classic. I’ll scrutinize Winston more carefully now since he seems to be more of a realistic target at this point.

The best quality Winston has in my opinion is changing speeds, he is simply superb in that regard for a HS junior, reminds me of Trey in that manner. Winston is also an excellent passer in both transition and PnR, he is a true PG in every sense. I do question whether his jumpshot will translate to college (especially off the dribble), as the release is low, he has poor balance because he inverts both of his feet to the left, and he has a kick prior to the release. Defense is going to be an issue in college in my opinion.

Put together a little roundup of 2016 PGs here http://www.umhoops.com/2015/05/15/point-guard-recruiting-where-things-stand/

His jump shot is fine, although a bit unique. The release point of a shot, for the most part is very overrated, especially for guards. He knows how to get his shot off. Winston has mastered a slight fade away in his jump shot if needed, but not a lot of guards are blocking shot on any level.

Thank you

The release point of a guard is very overrated? I don’t see how anyone can have this view in the context of a 5’11-6 guard. Release point is VERY important, especially in light of the fact that Winston isn’t the bounciest or quickest guy in the world.

@umhoops Can you post your PG order of preference based on the guys in your latest article. Just curious of how you rank them. Thanks.

Any news on Winston’s visit last week? Can’t find anything really on twitter. Just wondering if anybody heard some details about how it went.

How many jump shots from a PG get blocked? Even guards 5’8 and up? Jump shots, not penetration floaters or lay ins. I’m not saying Beilein won’t tweak a few things but if it works at the clip he’s been shooting it, it works. And again, kids like that know how to get their shot off. Even in college.

I would personally love goodin over Winston. I know Winston has some game but he is very average athletically. Also I agree with his low release point may be difficult to get off clean shots. Goodin is a great athlete with Darius Morris type size.I remember a kid by the name of brundidge that was supposed to be a top 50 player that struggled because he was not a good athlete.

Don’t think I would compare Cassius Winston and Carlton Brundidge in any way.

I would, they’re both not very athletic and fairly highly ranked

I’m not saying they have similar games FYI

One struggled in college to get to the rack like he allegedly excelled at in high school…like wise…I strongly believe Winston COULD experience similar diffulties. Now Winston has a great handle and passing abilities. Much more skilled than a brundidge, but I just don’t see him blowing by guys faster and taller than him and getting to the rack.

I’ve watched both guys a lot. Very different players. Trey Burke was a 6 foot point guard with average athleticism, Shannon Scott had all of the better measurables and was the better athlete. Ohio State offered Scott…

Point guard, more than any other position, is about finding guys that can play. Winston can play and he’s a winner.

I’m not going to disagree with those points and I’m sure that you’ve seen a lot more of him than I have. I suppose the question I would propose to you is do you think he can effectively do what he does right now against better athletes guarding him and bigger guys around the rim. If you do than I guess I don’t have a legitimate gripe. In fact maybe his competition has already been and elite level. Much greater basketball minds than mine love this kid and I respect that. I just wasn’t excited watching his clips. But also they’re just clips.

Here’s the thing with Cassius… Wherever he goes he looks good. At Michigan Elite Camp last summer, he clearly wasn’t as athletic or highly touted as Derryck Thornton, but in terms of production Winston was probably the king of the camp.

On the Nike EYBL this summer – best summer circuit out there – Winston was leading the league in scoring for the first two weekends.

He’s just a really productive guard and he produces so consistently that you have to respect that.

Ps: trey GREATLY changed his body to be that great in college because of genetics and the dude is a workhorse. Maybe Winston can do the same, but maybe not. Trey was cut like a man when he left, not everyone can unlock that change in strength or has the same work ethic. Certainly it became very difficult to push trey off the ball when he was a sophomore. Also, that boy was pretty quick off the dribble when he left. They did take a chance on trey in that regard and I’m not saying the same metamorphosis is not possible with Winston.

I agree with Dylan to the extent that Winston produces against elite HS comp. On the other hand, Brundidge put up ridiculous numbers playing for the same program - how did that work out in college?

Not saying that is indicative of what Winston will do, just acknowledging there is some well founded concern about the risks involved with sub par athletes that are small
