I guess it doesn't really matter about the Burke situation. All I know is that we need 2 ball handlers prior to 17. We can get by with either Langford or a PG in 16, but ideally you want 3 people that can handle the rock on the roster.
We definitely need at least 1 ballhandler prior to the 2017 class, and ideally 2. Langford and Winston, would be ideal IMO.
Neither was Stu Douglass…but that’s what he was utlized as because that’s where we needed him. Point is this, the last thing we need is another one dimensional shooter…just don’t understand the staff’s thinking at this point as JBlair referenced. That would take up another scholarship. Just can’t fathom a team in 16-17 with the only additions being Sina, Robinson, and Wagner (Teske will RS)…that is depressing
Stu was never a point guard and he was certainly never recruited to play PG. Sure he played some minutes to spell Trey during Trey’s freshman year, but that’s why they knew they needed Spike – a guy to play backup PG minutes for four years.
Doesn’t seem like there’s anything wrong for showing some precursory interesting in a transfer. Doesn’t mean they have offered or are pushing, etc.
The weird part about adding a sophomore transfer is that he would have junior eligibility in 2016-17 which would mean Michigan would have 9 juniors on the roster.

I totally understand the intention would most likely be for Sina to play off ball (much the same it was for Stu), but with Spike gone that would leave only a senior Walton as the only true known creator at this point, with hopefully MAAR to follow. Our roster would be filled with guys like Dawkins, Robinson, Irvin, Sina, Donnal, Wagner as just shooter types on offense. 6 is just too much overlap…need to really diversify our personnel
Are there any developments on the Jamal Murray front? Are we pushing hard for him?
With Murray, I wouldn’t expect things to move that quickly. He still hasn’t really taken many visits (unofficial for a U-M game is one of his only ones) and he doesn’t have to hurry. I suspect he’ll play out the whole AAU season before making his final decision whether to reclassify or not.
@MattD I’m not disagreeing with you, there’s nothing about his stats that show he’d be a great fit in my mind. I just don’t think it’s right to jump to any conclusions because Michigan showed some preliminary interest.
Sina is definitely not a guy that excites me. He’s played two years so far and his production has been poor.
But I also think it’s a mistake to characterize Irvin as “just a shooter” in two years. He’s showing some ability to score off the dribble and pass off the pick and roll.

LA - totally agree that Irvin has expanded his game, and I’ve noted as much a few times over the past 2-3 weeks. However, I don’t anticipate Zak being a guy that can handle a press next year in the same mold as THJ as a junior. Even if he does make that leap, Zak will be a senior in 16-17, so the need for roster balance still remains.
From a statistical standpoint, Sina is Matt Vogrich without the rebounding…no thanks
The interest from Sina has always seemed to be from his end – UM never offered or really got close, if I remember correctly. My guess is Sina and/or his dad are contacting UM and will receive polite chats but no offer.
Was able to catch a bit of Winston live against Western at Calihan (I’ve seen him several times over the past 2 years). Pretty much the same…very good offensive player, changes direction well, can shoot off the bounce or catch and shoot, excellent courtvision/passing, the defense never seems to be able to get him to play faster than he wants, Winston controls the tempo, not a good athlete.
On defense, however, Winston is subpar. A lot of this is due to the fact that Winston is simply not good in terms of lateral movement or straight line speed. Josh McFolley (UofD commit) routinely got around Winston with no problem and was even able to pick Winston’s pocket on a few occasions. McFolley reminds me of a smaller, poor man’s version of Mike Conley while at OSU. Winston is going to struggle on defense in college, he just doesn’t have the physical attributes to keep quicker guards in front of him.
If I had to compare Winston to a few players, it would be a hybrid between Trey Burke and Tyler Ennis. Winston is a better shooter than Ennis, and a better passer than Burke. I think Trey was a better athlete (even in HS) than Winston. Winston knows how to run an offense though, he is superb on that end of the floor…he simply controls and dictates how the game is played on offense.
Here is some film from the UD vs Western game at Calihan, kind of demonstrates a bit of my amateur scouting report in terms of Cassius’ inability to stay in front of his man on defense as well as his ability to control the game offensively. But he did struggle to get separation unless he has a screen.
