I think Chatman can and will play at this level. He can be a big contributor next year if he continues to develop. I see improvement this year. He may help us in the remaining games this year.
Chatman is a slow, unathletic, negative explosion, non finishing ex HS ball handling guard. He played in the smallest - weakest division of Oregon prep basketball, where his sheer size - length let him get a shot off the dribble whenever he wanted one.
It was easy to control the game against this type of comp, as his ball handling skills were never stressed, and his non athleticism never exposed. He actually is a much better shooter off the dribble because thatās what heās done all his life, control the ball.
He was allowed to do this in AAU as well, as high intensity D is an afterthought in this open gym guard orientated launch fest.
He obviously doesnāt have the quicks or change of direction to do this at the B1G level, so M tries to make him a catch and shoot 3 guy. Heās not.
His skills are his passing ability from the high post and an occasional penchant to grab a timely rebound. He is and never will be a 25-30 minute starter, as his lack of finishing ability and lackadaisical D usually leaves him on the outside looking in.
He often looks confused on O too, constantly gumming up the flow by being in the wrong position.
Heās just to limited physically to bang successfully and make a difference in that roll. Last thing we need is another chucked who canāt shoot.
