2015 Guard and Wing Recruiting (PJ Dozier, etc.)

Has Jalen Coleman taken an official visit to Michigan?

No. I recommend moving on from Jalen Coleman as a fan. If he commits to Michigan - pleasant surprise. If not - you spare yourself the disappointment.

Pretty much the approach I’ve taken for every upper tier recruit we’re in on. There seems to be an emerging pattern the last 2 years where we lead early and disappear late. Hopefully that changes in the next 3 months

Hopefully Dozier follows the Chatman model as far as Michigan recruiting arc goes. Assuming Robinson commits to Michigan, we’ll be surrounding any PG types (i.e. Dozier) with enough good-to-very-good outside shooters (Irvin, Robinson, Walton, Dawkins) and hopefully big men who can finish from mid range or at the rim as well as a couple guys who can cut and finish at the rim (Dawkins, Wilson) to satisfy their PG needs.

Always hope when you get a guy on campus, so we have a puncher’s chance with Dozier (but not holding my breath). If I recall correctly, Kam’s last visit was to UA and he still came to UM, so while it does appear Dozier will go to SC (family ties), anything is possible.

But to follow up on this, it’s also more healthy, IMO, to worry about the guys you got rather than the guys you didn’t get. For example, after Keita Bates-Diop committed to OSU, I was bumming for awhile. But I eventually got over him and now fully expect Kam Chatman to end up better than him. Likewise, we didn’t get Booker, who granted is an excellent shooter and appears to be quite the competitor with lots of basketball smarts, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Dawkins ends up better than him. So if we can somehow land Dozier - let’s face it, if he wants to be THE man, he’ll go to SC or Georgetown, but if he wants to go as high as possible in the draft, he’ll commit to Michigan - that’s a win over Kennard.

Our coaches haven’t always gotten their first targets (we can go back further than the last couple years), but they’ve mostly gotten the right ones.

Honestly believe Kennard is way overranked.

Also a member on Realgm whose opinion I highly value:

langford has better ball skills and has a better all-around game than shabazz. he does have a power slashing game like bazz, but with a better handle, better change of pace in particular. he can run the point in a pinch, is a decent playmaker and he can defend too. one thing that he doesn’t have that shabazz has is great length. langford’s length is average to below average which could hurt his prospects going forward. he’s strong, has good spring, plays at different speeds and knows how to get defenders on their heels to set up his pull up.

i really like pj dozier. i see him as more of an all-around, playmaking 2, but he plays the point a lot and sees himself as more of a point. i guess what his position will come down to is how well he can defend 1’s. heady player, really good passer, more of a smooth than explosive athlete, good length. imo, he could stand to look for his offense a bit more

you’re obviously asking because UM’s recruiting them and i know they made dozier’s final 5, but both would be perfect fits for the beilein system (you should already know that michigan recruits certain types of players and both fit the mold. both are smart and multi-dimensional). on top of that, neither are 1 and done candidates. dozier COULD be a 2 and through depending on how much he physically matures. langford needs to shake off the injury bug and improve his outside shot, his pull up game is money but his long ball is not.

Sounds like being able to play some point guard is very important to him. Although, it sounded like his top 5 was generated in part by schools that said he could meet that goal.

Tough to beat out a school for a “legacy”, but who would want to spend 2 or more years in the presence of ( Mr Hyde ) Frank Martin willingly? Hopefully his visit here will be everything he’s looking for. Chatman repeat?

Funny thing is that Beilein and Martin actually were roommates when they coached for USA Basketball a couple years back. One of the more unlikely combinations if you ask me.

Michigan is being forthright with Dozier. He would replace LeVert and be one of the two primary ball-handlers and decision-makers along with Walton. If he proves good at decision-making, Michigan will give him more freedom and the NBA will give him looks as a PG. We even heard NBA guys were impressed with Stauskas’s PG skills at the NBA combine. There’s no rule that says a college team can’t have two future NBA PGs on the roster at the same time, and basketball-wise, I think Michigan is perfect for Dozier. Everything else about him seems like he’d be a good fit, so I hope he really becomes comfortable quickly on his visit.

No argument from me that Beilein is basically pitching that message. I think it’s just more interesting from the standpoint of a fan who has gotten basically zero details of Michigan being involved with Dozier until recently, and now we maybe have a sense of what they are offering. Put me in the camp of whatever wing/guard we land in 2015 may be expected to be capable of handling the point in a pinch if injury/etc. were to occur.

That’s why I don’t understand when people (not you) say the coaches aren’t working hard on the recruiting trail. We just don’t know.

Regarding “whatever wing/guard we land in 2015 may be expected to be capable of handling the point in a pinch if injury/etc. were to occur”, I think it’s a little more than that - that they think Dozier can be even more of a de facto co-PG with Walton, even more than LeVert because of his vision. Just comes down to his decision-making and how little he is prone to turnovers.

Hmmm. No MSU.

Word is from Temple fans that MSU/Izzo “messed up” with Brunson…whatever that means.

I love it. MSU fans were basically assuming they’d get Brunson and Swanigan. I’d bet they miss on both. Swanigan has (and will have) plenty of options and it’s tough to see him choosing MSU in that scenario.

Things “not looking good” for MSU in relation to Brunson.

Purdue gets official visit No. 4 from Brunson.

I would be very surprised if Michigan gets a visit – '16 PGs seem to have been the priority in July – but am also surprised that Purdue got one.

Wonder what Izzo did (or didn’t do) re: Brunson.

I think it refers to Izzo taking Ahrens, Forbes and Harris.
