I think big part of it is that I don’t think Harbaugh is that same 2016 guy anymore. I think there’s been some aspect of decline there. He’s clearly become more disorganized in both coaching and recruiting approach since then. 2016 was a long time ago, and it wasn’t even with his guys.
I still don’t love Warde, but if you presume that our only real options were Juwan or Cooley, he made the right choice. I’ll take the chance that he makes the common sense hire and goes after someone like Matt Rhule instead of Mike Debord
really? Did I just imagine the awful years with Hoke and RichRod? Five of the seven years after Lloyd and before Harbaugh did not reach that sleepwalk pace. And 1 of the remainder was 8-5.
The consensus at the time is that it was a horrible hire. He had a sub .500 record at MAC level schools and then people got into him after he repeated Michigan man tropes at the press conference. Go read the Mgoblog post from when he was hired.
As said, Hoke was an obviously horrible hire at the time. Rich Rod in retrospective from seeing his post-Michigan tenure was a mediocre coach. Who then had to deal with huge transition costs / the Michigan admin actively sabotaging him with brought him down another level
I don’t get why people are so set on Rich Rod and Hoke as the baseline of Michigan football. Clearly they were not qualified for the job. One in hindsight and one obviously at the time (and as said Rich Rod had a lot of extenuating circumstances). The point is that 7-8 wins is an average college football team. Michigan has significantly more built in advantages than an average college football. Thus being average means you coached below average. It is by definition not insanely difficult to find an average coach
