NCAA 2021: Michigan vs. UCLA Open Thread

The basketball gods have been pretty fair to us in the modern era of Michigan hoops. We get the insane OSU shot against MSU to win a share of the Big Ten in ‘12, we see J-Mo’s tip in agonizingly hang on the rim the next year. Trey Burke gets his player of the year moment against Kansas, The ref gives it right back to him on The Block. Spike does the spike game, Hancock does true Hancock game. One of those Harrison twins crushes our souls in 2014, Kam Chatman miracle shots us into the tourney in ‘16. Derrick Walton’s shot rims out against Oregon in the ‘17 tourney, Jordan Poole hits his crazy game winner. Now here we are, with another agonizingly close missed banner. Well I guess that just means we’ll have to have Caleb Houstan hit a 35 footer to beat Illinois in the big ten tournament championship game or something.

This team, with Livers, was better than the 2014 team. Without him, I’m not sure.

What I am sure about is that 2014 Kentucky would beat 2021 UCLA by 25.

“Just one game” for Wagner is as bs as people
Saying he should return.

When they needed his offense against MSU, OSU and UCLA he turned in brutal games. Not what you expect from a lottery pick.

That said, the the only thing that defines a lottery pick or even first round pick, is being drafted in the lottery or first round

My God, this is spot on.

Yeah, the weird thing is that we never win the Big Ten and go to the Final Four in the same year.

My grandpa recently passed away and was a large reason we were all Michigan fans. This team rallied our family through dark times. Thought this team was a team of destiny. Sometimes you get got.
Forever, Go Blue!

Was that self-talk? I chide because I can.

@ace11daley you screwed up. If you’re going to be wrong, be wrong about Livers, not about tonight and Gonzaga. I’m (jokingly) blaming this whole season on you.

Ha! 10 years ago me probably would’ve been fine making the same trade.

Get out of my head, man.

We’ve been spoiled by the recent success of Michigan basketball. I remembered the time where Michigan was mediocre at best and our hope was them to make the NCAA. Elite 8 is nothing to sneeze at and I’m proud of the team for exceeding our expectations for the team.

Franz would be wise to go while people still think his shot is a swing skill, down shooting year next year and he may go undrafted.

I think he just played bad. It happens. Nba won’t be worrying about a 3 game sample size of shooting. FTs are great, form is fine.

After the decade prior, i’ll take this loss 10/10 times over staying up to watch NIT games on a school night.

It’s a mental game as much as a physical one. Players aren’t robots that always have a 56.78% chance of making their layups and sometimes they just shoot 10% overall by random chance. There’s always a mental aspect to it.

With threes, you can often chalk stuff up to small sample sizes since the sample sizes are legitimately small and the difference between great and meh 3 point shooting is only a couple plays. All the missed layups, free throws and turnovers ain’t a small sample though.

Ugh. Finally calmed down a bit. A great run without Livers. These types of games happen sometimes. I’m gutted for the team. It was a pleasure to hit the open threads with you guys all year and look forward to doing it again next season. The future looks bright! New Orleans here we come!

Franz was 1-10 shooting, some of those shots included a near air ball on a wide open look, a layup that was nowhere close to going in. He traveled before even dribbling the ball at one point, he gave up some uncharacteristic East baskets to guys that are nearly a foot short than him.

I love Franz and we would not be here without him. And I’d love for someone smarter than me to show me game tape and prove that I’m overreacting. I’m sure he made some great defensive plays that I’m just blinded from seeing in negativity. But the kid looked off all night, most of his shots were not particularly close, and he was making uncharacteristic errors all night. Not sure the reason but he was bad. I so badly wanted him to make one of those shots.

I think he will put it together and find some consistency and be a solid NBA player. I wish the best for him

This is the biggest “what if” year of them all, due to Livers’ absence down the stretch.

Will either be back?

Yep yep. He’s at the peak of his draft stock right now I think.
