NCAA 2021: Michigan vs. UCLA Open Thread

Just feel like we are not playing our game. Not making good reads and forcing shots. Not liking our chances right now but this team has proved me wrong before.

We’ve got to open up the floor but hitting some 3s. Then maybe, we can focus on Dickinson.

Yep – gotta drive hard to the rim, cut hard (like we saw vs FSU) and get some post touches against the switch.

I think Dickinson drawing two is the most likely way for UM to get open threes… UCLA sticking to him pretty much straight up though.

I disagree shot quality was similar

This is what UCLA does, make contested shots. They’re going to keep making them.

UCLA is packing the paint and will continue to do so until Michigan makes them pay. They have to loosen up. They have to find someone who will shoot with confidence. Juwan and the staff need to get the players’ heads straightened out. Sometimes the job is Xs and Os, other times it’s psychology. Get their dobbers up and we will be smiling at the end of this one.

It does seem they have been having a hard time feeding the post the last two games, but against Fl st that made some sense to me. This should be much much easier so it was disappointing how bad it looked out there.

I think a big half from Hunter is very possible here if we stay sharp.

I know. But you don’t need to do it indiscriminately. Not on Franz’s man.

Michigan had 11 shots at the rim, UCLA had 4.

I thought UCLA got better 3pt looks, though.

I don’t hate it, I’m just saying. Our best response was a guy we 100% can’t rely on as a scorer scoring. How have we not gotten HD involved?

You get 5 fouls. Franz needs to correct the bad 2nd foul moving forward. Just stay on the ground, don’t try to block shots - you can affect a shot just as well as a hand up. I expect he’ll flip that switch in the 2nd half.

Hopefully the shooting backdrop is better at the other end of the court. I hate these domes.

the shots that hurt have been the open 3s, not the contested shots

That’s not what anybody does. “We make contested twos” is a way to say “we don’t understand how lucky we’ve been.”

I’ve gone into every game (well, not the Texas southern one :slightly_smiling_face: ) this tourney mentally prepared for it to be the last game we see this team play. Do I think this will be it? No. I’ve watched enough Juwan Howard basketball to see how Michigan generally comes out from halftime. But could it be? Absolutely.

If you haven’t, just acknowledge that fact during halftime here and watch the second half while keeping in mind what an awesome season it’s been and what a special group of guys we got to cheer for and see persevere through the COVID shutdown with no positives and the Livers injury to snag a Big Ten championship, a 1 seed, and an elite 8.

And here’s to a final 4 too :beers:

Playing basketball in a football stadium when capacity is by rule limited is very NCAA.

Win or lose I just hope this next half we stop with the stupid mental mistakes (like trying a half court reverse layup). If we clean up our game and still lose that’s fine but just stop with the stupid mistakes

To start the 2nd half, I put Johns on Juzang. He started on him and Juzang didn’t go off until Brown went in for him. Juwan switched Brooks onto him and when he did, Juzang started posting him with the 5-6 inch height advantage.

Wagner has 2 fouls and needs to be protected a little. Maybe later in the half if he stays out of foul trouble.

Maybe Michigan is playing like garbage on purpose to lull Gonzaga into overlooking their next game.
