God, I just feel so bad for Beilein
Because he hasn’t won a national title? That’s true for over 99% of coaches. The man’s had a fantastic run and if this year is at all unsatisfactory, that’s only because he’s raised the bar super-high.

Keep that head up. We are with you and your teammates through and through.
You guys make us proud and represent the school better than 99% of student athletes.
Thank you and Go Blue!
Simpson had an O rating of 5.
He’s a good college player but he can be a liability in certain matchups. Part of it too is he needs more help- Michigan needs another playmaker to emerge in order to be an elite offense.
Agree, and I know Simpson’s pick and roll numbers were really good but I feel like that had a lot to do with the system. He really need to improve intransistion.
Crazy stat: The last 18 games of the season followed a pattern of 2 consecutive wins followed by a loss.
W-W-L-W-W-L-W-W-L-W-W-L-W-W-L-W-W-L
Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Those ends of season discussions take place. Attrition probably happens I did mention it earlier, but I am now wondering where it could come.
But this coming year might be the best chance to have a loaded team come back for Beilein.
Weirdly because of player development/NBA interest, Beilein always ends up losing a key piece that could possibly give the team a huge edge the next season.
Excited to see the offseason development of 3 players. Dejuluis, Johns and Castleton. My gut says all the main pieces come back. They could be special again next year!
I think Castleton is the key. Kid looked good in limited time, and it is obvious he needed to add strength. There was an article the other day saying he is staying and going to put in the work this offseason.
Love Johns potential as well. Kid just looked confused this year. Had some moments. He can shoot the ball, just has to be comfortable.
He got figured out.
Later in the season he adjusted. After a couple of games where he was barreling into triple teams, he stopped trying to force stuff that he couldn’t make quite so much. He let the offense come to him, making 3s, driving, actually stopping and trying to reset the offense instead of just taking horrible shots at the rim.
I hope he comes back. He’s a bad passer, but there’s a chance he could learn to see the floor and pass… and that would make him an unstoppable ball-screen player. Right now defenses collapse around him when he drives. Imagine a version of Iggy who can hit spot-up 3s, drive to the basket and score… and hit, say, Isaiah Livers for wide-open shots when defenses react to his drives. Pretty good, right?
This team has, in Simpson, Teske, and Livers, a solid core of players that will make up the backbone of the starting lineups. It has in both this and next year’s freshman class a pool of guys that could produce a real contributor or two.
What happens with Iggy and Poole in the offseason is really fascinating. This is a team that is just as good next year even if they go pro; it has the potential to be a #1 seeded national championship top-three favorite if they come back and develop.
I think year 2 johns will be a beast ala Blake griffin 2nd year at Oklahoma
They really needed Poole to develop more as a secondary option to initiate the offense rather than it all falling on Simpson. It’s too much pressure for Simpson especially with his limitations to create the the entire offense. Poole just didn’t develop that aspect of his game this year. Would have been nice to see him use more ball screens and make plays but it didn’t happen often this year.
They obviously don’t have enough shooting but their lack of passing ability really hurt as well. They were definitely exposed tonight by a great defensive team. Hopefully, they can make a lot of improvements internally and develop into a more well rounded team.
I think they’re both back. Both still have flaws in their games that were exposed throughout the season
I don’t feel bad for Beilein because I don’t think he wants us to. I feel bad for all the guys though. It’s important to keep that perspective. They’re 18-22 year old guys that have dedicated their lives to basketball and Michigan without pay and we’re losers sitting on a couch
It is time to retire the pink shoes.
because…?
I think non-conference results were juiced up by the summer tour. 10 extra practices and 3 games at the beginning of the year is a lot of runway to figure things out that other teams don’t have.
We also had a pretty easy non-conference schedule. Looking at it in hindsight, this is probably our easiest Non-Con in recent memory. The best games were versus 6, 31, 71 and 79. And then no one else in the top 200.
In previous years top 100 opponents were:
2018 - 8, 36, 56, 66
2017- 11,16, 24, 32, 70
2016 - 14, 16, 26, 39, 74
2015 - 4, 5, 26, 45, 53
2014 - 2, 8, 20, 34, 38
2013 - 11, 27, 33, 80
2012 - 12, 19, 26, 33, 58
2011 - 12, 25, 56, 71, 72
I’m signing off for the year. I enjoyed reading all the comments, venting, and analyzation. All in all it was a really, really good year. I’ll have a few beers tonight and toast to this season and next.
This young man is the heart and soul of this program. I can’t imagine what he’s feeling here but this picture really tugs at me. Proud he’s our guy.
