They said on the radio/BTN-plus broadcast that Naz will not be calling any Michigan games this year, though she may be in the studio for half time.
Well, at the half it continues to be clear that it is bombs-away from 3 this year. Multiple attempts from 7 different players already in the half and 20 total attempts. Unfortunately, only hitting at a 25% clip.
A few things that have stood out:
- Alyssa Crockett got extended run at the 4 spot. She also hit a 3 in this spot. Good for her!
- Greta looks to be the primary ball handler when she’s in and really looks to push the pace on offense. She also is always looking to shoot and clearly has the green light to do so. Her usage numbers are going to be very high. Hoping the efficiency can keep pace. I’ve noticed she had an interesting hitch in her shot that makes for a slow wind-up on catch-and-shoot. I imagine more athletic teams might be able to close out on those easier.
- Overall, passing looks crisp and the ball movement has been very good. Constant passes, not much dribbling. That’s a good a sign.
- They still love to run that arcing high-low pass which they continue to complete at an astonishing rate. Still, I feel like that pass has led to many turnovers over the past couple years and it will be interesting to see if that trend continues when competition ramps up.
Haven’t seen them yet but just looking at box scores you have to love the way Phelia, Kiser, and Williams have started the season
Glad to see Brown back. Assume she ends up starting soon.
I’m quite curious to see where Brown lands in the rotation. Right now Kampschroeder is starting in her spot and I’m not entirely sure it doesn’t stay that way. While it seems Greta’s shooting will be streaky, she clearly looks to push the ball and is aggressive on defense. The fact that she’s taking up so much usage clearly means the has the green light to do so. I don’t know that I would be surprised to see her overtake Brown’s starting spot for good.
I was there last night, but I was hired by St. Francis to photograph their team during the game. So, I wasn’t paying that much attention to who did what for Michigan, other than they were playing some tough defense and forced a lot of turnovers. That, and a lot of buckets in the paint.
I did talk with someone I know at WTKA, before the game, and was able to find out that Varejao had a concussion recently and that Sollom had surgery (knee, IIRC) in the off-season. So that explains their DNP’s thus far.
It was great to see Naz, Danielle, and Amy all back for the banner-raising.
Here’s the photo gallery. Granted, it’s from the St. Francis perspective, but… hey, Michigan players too.
It’s been hard to get a great grasp on minutes distribution because the first two games have been such a beatdown, but so far it looks like 30 mpg for Kiser, 20 for Williams, 15-20 for Crockett, 15 for Stuck. That’s 80 minutes right there between the 4 and 5. It will be interesting to see how the minutes shake out once the three injured reserves at the 5 spot are available.
Only other note after three games is that I have been extremely impressed by Alyssa Crockett thus far. Seems like a very smart, sound player. She moves her feet very well on defense and does a little bit of everything. One thing this team does more than I wish is turn the ball over on passes, but all of Crockett’s passes are sharp and on the money. Seems like a very intelligent player and has thus far – schedule caveats apply – acquitted herself very well to the college game.
Really flummoxed by the (lack of) Leigha Brown
If you watch that YouTube “series” m, KBA calls Brown “the best guard in the country”, and Broen discussing how she wants to be a first round pick.
I mentioned last week that Greta really likes to push the pace and get the offensive moving. I don’t always get the same feeling with Leigha Brown. It often feels to me like Leigha wants to score more than facilitate but there are plenty of scorers on this team and they are at their best when they’re moving the ball around. It just doesn’t seem like she’s in rhythm with the rest of the team right now. That’s just my $0.02.
I don’t think I’d be surprised to see Greta take her starting spot permanently, but she has an important role on the team and they will need her ability to handle the ball off the bench.
I’m also curious about the DNP against Delaware State as the broadcast mentioned briefly that it was a coach’s decision but didn’t go into it further.
To be fair, KBA also used to call Amy Dilk the best point guard in the country so I wouldn’t quite take her word for it. My two cents? I think Leigha Brown is coming off a preseason injury. Given her history and the measured way KBA has brought her back in, reminds me of every single other time Brown has had an injury
And she started yesterday, with Kampschroeder going to the bench. So…there we go.
Also - Brown is much better than Dilk ever showed. (due respect to KBA)
Girls down 2 with 5 minutes left. Playing a very tough USF program tonight. Cmon girls, pull through!
Nolan with a massive 3 to go up 1! Been a rough night for her so hope she gets hot here!
Michigan wins!!! We’ll play Baylor tomorrow. Way to go ladies!
I just saw that Tennesse has a transfer, Rickea Jackson. Did KBA ever inquired about her transfer since she’s from Detroit or she wouldn’t have made it past Michigan admission with the transfer credits?
They brought in a high profile transfer who is playing for them as it is
UM up 37-35 at half vs Baylor. Baylor shooting 50% from 3. Don’t think that’s sustainable. Michigan at a very poor 13% from three but Emily Kiser has 20! Need to start hitting our outside shot and might be able to pull away here……
Leigha Brown with an awful half too. If you told me she’d be 0-5 from the field and we were up at halftime, I’d take it no questions.
Starting to think defense and the 3 ball may not be our thing this year……
