Michigan Women's Hoops

M went from a 5-point lead to a 4-point deficit in the blink of an eye late in the 3Q.

Minnesota has the slimmest of leads going into the final frame. Here’s hoping Michigan can finish this one out! This is the kind of road game they can and need to win.

Overcoming this performance from Hobbs on the road to a good team would be big

I really hate that you can’t rewind (or start from the beginning) with BTN+.

Edit: also, the camera work in this game is big yikes.

Holloway has left a few layups short this quarter. Gotta have those.

What in the heck was that foul call on Holloway?

…make-up call was a block on what almost certainly was a charge on Holloway off the rebound.

Okay, that was an absolutely brutal finish for Minnesota. Gets Michigan to turn it over and then does…that.

Much needed road win!

It’s really exciting to look forward to the coming years with the young nucleus and another strong class coming in next year.

It’s fun that I can’t tell which freshman is better because our top two are awesome

And while she’s definitely not on the same level as Swords or Olson, I feel like Mila Holloway has acquitted herself very well as a true freshman playing PG in the Big Ten. Believe it or not, she has a slightly higher win share, offensive rating, and player efficiency rating than Hobbs this year:

She is behind only Kampschroeder (41.7%) in 3P% at 40.4%. She has the highest assist % on the team (24.6%), but also has the highest turnover % (almost dead even at 24.7%). If she can cut down on turnovers as she grows into the role over the next few seasons, she could be a serious weapon alongside those two and the incoming players.

You’ve seen more than me, but Hobbs, when I’ve watched, ends up eating a ton of, for lack of a better term, sloppy usage - taking late-clock threes after possessions get stoned, REALLY hunting threes generally nearly to the point of recklessness, etc.

(edit: Hobbs is only about 1% higher in usage than Holloway but part of that is Holloway’s substantially higher TO rate which speaks more to role (primary PG) than anything)

Like, when I watch, and ask myself “who here is getting stretched outside their comfort zone”, it’s Jordan Hobbs basically every game (I mean, she is taking 2 more threes and close to 2 more twos in 2 more minutes a game than last year)

I definitely agree with you.

My goal wasn’t necessarily to say that Holloway has been Hobbs’ equal or that Hobbs has been bad (although she had a rough game last night). I was only trying to say that the mere fact that she’s hanging in the vicinity of the senior leader while shouldering the PG load as a true freshman is very encouraging for her future.

In terms of players getting stretched outside their comfort zone, I continue to be impressed by how admirable Greta has been trying to play the post on defense. She is almost always undersized to be trying to play that role but has held her own much better than I could have anticipated. I still feel more comfortable on defense (and definitely offense) when Greta is in than when Grabovskaia is in.

Oh Inknow you weren’t - just saying the ask between Hobbs and Holloway is different (Hobbs I think is getting asked to chuck, Holloway is not)

lol - Greta completing the never before seen point guard to center transition

The positions of our seniors (Jordan and Greta) really sort of speaks to the fact that while this team is good, it really was last minute triage job and held together by a considerable amount of scotch tape and for lack of a better term, moxie

I live in Minneapolis and went to the Michigan vs Minnesota women’s game last night. It was one of the first women’s game that I’ve been to in person since the Lindsay Whalen era here in Minneapolis. Was struck by three things:

  1. First, was just how talented ALL of the women’s players were, and how far the play has come since last time I’d been to such a game. Not sure that talent and athleticism comes across fully on TV, but the difference between now and the past for me was striking;

  2. Really impressed by the new Minnesota coach. Last few years weren’t the best here in the Twin Cities for Minnesota women’s hoops, and it looks like they’ve chosen a winner in their new coach;

  3. Doubly impressed by the young core of the Wolverines. Feel like if they stick around, U of M women’s hoops is in store for some special things in the coming years!

To cap off the night, the Wolverines came through with the victory in a hotly contested game! Great night here in the Twin Cities!

It was a pretty exciting first half. We’re up 4, despite Swords, Olson, Kampschroeder, Yulia, and Daniels all getting dinged with two fouls.

Swords and Olson didn’t play most of the 2nd quarter. Holloway and Hobbs are leading the way and DelFosse had some solid minutes.

Swords has 2 points and Olson has 0. Sparty has 11 turnovers to our 6, which has certainly helped our cause.
