Michigan Players in the NBA

No kidding. It is hard to tell if he’s in his tip toes in that pic. If he is flat footed, he’s almost as tall as Teske and clearly way taller than the 6’8" Duncan.

Franz is positioned closer to the camera and with likely bigger shoes than Duncan so I think it’s exaggerated. But he is definitely taller than Duncan, probably very close to Mo

Remember there were rumor of him growing an another inch that he’s 6’10"? Not sure if it has been confirmed or not

Moe Wagner-Hunter Dickinson trash talking during a pickup game is the least surprising thing ever.

Wasn’t sure where to put this, but Sam Webb went to DC area to scout a football prospect and it turns out that Brian Ellerbe is the AD at the prospect’s school. Ellerbe told him that he had a commitment from Jason Richardson but couldn’t get him cleared through admissions. He also told Webb that he could have secured the commitment of Brent Darby had he hired his HS coach as assistant.

Sounds like wishful thinking but I thought it was interesting and funny.

Ah to think what Jason Richardson could have become under the coaching of Brian Ellerbe.

What I find most insane about that story is that he’s talking about taking the high road with these two guys due to academics and shady coach hires. Ellerbe is the same guy that recruited Josh Moore, Avery Queen, Dominic Ingerson, JaQuan Hart, Marcus Bennett, etc. If anything it shows just how screwed up Ellerbe’s approach was with the near constant wash-out rate he had in his tenure.

A better “What if?” is what if Mo Taylor was a better driver?

Since we are at it, let us take it a step further and quote Marty who said “what if” Mo Taylor had traded the Ford Explorer for a Delorian equipped with the flux capacitor?

You just made me Google whether Delorians had back seats

Even if they did, you would not be able to fit Tractor Traylor in the back, which means he had to get another ride, which further means the flux continium is broken.

Love this line of humor. I also looked up our recruits from 1997-2001 when Ellerbe was there. He signed 19 players. Here’s how their careers broke down:

  • 4 transferred
  • 4 left due to academics
  • 3 left due to disciplinary action
  • 1 went early to the NBA (Crawford) after being suspended by the NCAA
  • 7 stayed four years

Also, the problem with Mo Taylor having a different car or a tank or taking the bus on that ill-fated trip was that it was going to blow up eventually. When you’re laundering money through random recruits from Maryland like Lou Bullock who was good, but not great…the bubble would burst someday.

Love the statistics here. This morning has been a fun read. One dissension though - I thought Bullock was above average and really enjoyed his tenure. Not sure what barometer you use, he was drafted 2nd round NBA. From Wikipedia “… his vacated records are unsurpassed for most single-season [three-point field goals] and career [free throws] in [Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball. He held the B1G record for 3’s until 2011 - if his numbers counted.

I grew up watching the Spanish Basketball League (ACB) and Bullock was a superstar. He was one of my favorites and I didn’t know University of Michigan existed at the time, haha.

Lou was objectively a good player, without a doubt.

I was 1 year of school behind him, so his sophomore year was my freshman. I remember going to Crisler to watch him and Taylor and Traylor and and Baston lose an exhibition to Athletes In Action and sleep walk to the NIT.

I watched them beat Duke, sleep through most of a season, play a good few games in the first Big 10 tourney to win it, then get bounced in the first round of the tournament.

I watched the miserable year after where he and Robbie Reid were the alpha and omega of arguably the worst team in modern Michigan history.

Im sorry, I HATED this era. Those guys didn’t care for more than 30 minutes at a time, and it showed. They weren’t nice guys around campus, they didn’t want to be there. One of the main reasons I favor high school to pros is so guys with no interest in playing college aren’t compelled to - they taught me it’s not fun.
