Was going to say also that in 2020 wasn’t Dwight really good in his role for LA? Thought he was one of the better rim protectors in the league last year. The numbers don’t wow but I thought he played a pretty important role and thrived.

Not saying DARKO is the be all end all, but (a) I love their career trajectory tool and (b) it makes me feel right and that’s vv important. Here’s the link if anybody’s interested:

TBH the biggest takeaway might just be that Richaun is right in that peak age range that you’d prefer.

I stand corrected. I was not impressed with Colangelo’s team building effort for team USA and yes, I realize that players opting out didn’t help. Still, you have a good pool of players to choose from to form a great team roster that makes sense.

Jarrett Allen would have been perfect considering the situation but he’s also a restricted free agent.

Richaun Holmes is also a FA

That’s a problem bc he wouldn’t want to risk injury before signing or something?

And FA starts in the middle of it

For similar reasons, not saying he was offered one of these newly opened spots, but I’m glad Duncan isn’t playing. Whether or not those 5 days before free agency of international play would have any material impact on his negotiations with teams, he has gotten to this free agency without getting injured or exposed and there’s very little upside for him to get more financially out of going. As someone who has never gotten paid in his career yet it 100% makes sense for him to say “I’m good” and go into negotiations with teams based on what’s already on tape. Securing the bag all that matters

lol JFC what an awful way to look at anything

dude is looking at a, what, $60M over 4 years NBA contract? maybe it’s a crass sentiment but if that’s what’s on the table I don’t know what other kind to express.

Securing the bag is all that matters for the next month*. It’s called contract negotiations which start in 2 weeks

Not that I want to enter into this argument with you again. Perfectly reasonable in the short term to be focused on his one chance to secure generational wealth. Doesn’t mean you have to be entirely motivated in everything in his life to make more money

Ant must either be rationalizing their poor play or he’s what they call a casual. Does anyone believe the best of the USA would beat the best of an international team by 30??

Jokic
Giannis
Doncic
Gilgieous-Alexander
Simmons
Embiid
Sabonis
Bogdanovic
Murray
Gobert
Siakim
Dragic/Schroeder/Rubio 1 of them

The best of the USA isn’t beating that roster by 30 points maybe he wants Brandon Wade to get some run.

Its a fun hypothetical. Definitely not a blowout, though Embiid and Giannis would have to carry a very heavy defensive load. And in general the International roster has too many Bigs which is why I give US an advantage. But talent wise it’s not a blowout at all. 4 of the 10 best current players are international, and they’re also younger than the US counterparts

Ant’s kind of a social media content creator now. They feel the need to make these type of hot takes all the time to keep their base engaged.

Was listening to a podcast with John Hollinger (former Grizzlies exec, created PER and lots of other basketball statistical models) who was going over a model he created that estimated what every FA would get paid. It spat out 4 years at an average of $24 mil per year for Duncan. His commentary on it was basically that Duncan is a one-man spacing solution despite a pretty limited skill set, and that he’s the premier “tough three” shooter in the league. His feeling was that he personally wouldn’t love paying Robinson that because there really is no chance he’d outplay it (ie, he largely is what he is at this point - the contract wouldn’t ever be a “value” just “appropriately paid). He did, however, stand by the idea that it’s about where Robinson would end up.

His article at The Athletic also contained this cool nugget:

“The key is how insanely efficient Robinson is with his fairly infrequent shots. Robinson’s career true shooting percentage of 65.1 is the best of all time for a perimeter player, and it’s the best by a huge margin; Stephen Curry is next on the list at 62.5.”

Still remember those open threads where some of us contended Robinson would be in the NBA, and got laughed at.

$100 million later …
